Yesterday Steve got to ring the bell and graduate from the short term care part of his bone marrow transplant. It was much anticipated as we met this milestone as we could hardly believe we made it to this point. The last seven months has felt like seven years. We were so excited to get this point.

You can imagine our disappointment when one of Steve’s test for multiple myeloma came back positive. When they did their rounds of tests for acute myeloid leukemia, they also tested him for multiple myeloma, which is the other incurable blood cancer that he has been in remission from since 2015. We are not sure what this means at this point. We have a meeting with the long-term transplant doctor on June 4 and we will discuss with him at that time. We are hoping that there is some other explanation for this related to the recent transplant and that it is not in fact his multiple myeloma returning. Please join us and praying that this is not multiple myeloma returning even though it seems to be the case.

As the doctor delivered this news and then said “OK go ring the bell congratulations graduation”, we felt a little bit like someone just took the legs out from underneath us. I told some friends that I feel like I am running a race and I was just about to cross a finish line when I was told the line has been moved and I do not know where the finish line is or how long I’m going to have to keep running. It’s been a long hard road.

We so appreciate and covet your prayers. All of the other tests were negative for disease which we are so grateful for. Steve is slowly getting stronger but still having side effects from the chemo he is on for maintenance as well as his kidney function is struggling a bit from all the meds.
