Steve’s Story

Site created on October 26, 2023

During routine testing to monitor Steve’s multiple myeloma diagnosis some blood work came back that required further testing. After a bone marrow biopsy it was determined that Steve now had Acute Myeloid Leukemia which is another form of blood cancer. He is currently at Vanderbilt University Medical Center doing a 30 to 35 day in patient chemo treatment. We plan on posting updates to the site for those of you that are interested in how Steve is doing. We all know how tough Superman is and have no doubt he will kick this cancer too and be 2 for 2. Steve’s granddaughter compares everyone’s strength to the strength of her Papa. So as Ellie says, “Be strong like Papa”.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Kris Wheeler

Hello,

Once again checking in. Next big steps are on May 13th when Steve has some testing done. Bone marrow biopsy, pulmonary test and such. We are getting close to the 100 days mark which seems monumental but we are wondering how much things are going to change. Steve has still been going to the hospital 2 times per week for testing and support. He has yet to graduate to once a week because of his kidney function and platelet count.

Prayer requests at this time would be:
  1. That there is no cancer in his bone marrow.
  2. 100% donor cells in his bone marrow.
  3. No FLT3 gene mutation in the advanced testing.
  4. Steve would start to grow stronger. He is not gaining weight and really would like to.
  5. Just strength and hope for us. This has been a very long and exhausting journey.

We have a new granddaughter born in April. So grateful that we got to be around to see her after she was born!

Thanks for all the love and support.
Kris
