Joe continues to encounter some struggles on his recovery journey, so your support and encouragement to Joe and his family are very important.
The medical team believes that much of Joe’s struggle continues to be caused by a dangerous reaction to one of the anti-rejection drugs. While the doctors believe the medication is generally out of his system, the residual effects remain. They continue to use an alternate drug to fight rejection while they explore other possible options to help Joe regain strength.
Two bronchoscopies this week each indicated slow improvement of Joe’s airways, but there is a continuing need to check healing conditions. Specialists were finally able to implant a much-needed port to allow easier administration of essential medicines. The main worries today (Sunday) were elevated ammonia levels and low blood pressure. In CT scans today, the medical professionals determined that several important indicators remain stable.
We are struck by the fact that many of Joe’s nurses and medical providers comment that he is a kind, appreciative, sweet man. Even those who had never met Joe prior to his hospitalization recognize his character in the midst of unanticipated struggles. Those of us who know and love Joe smile at those apt adjectives, but we can each think of additional qualities of “our” patient.
Thanks to each of you for your continuing prayers and thoughtful messages.
