Newest Update

Journal entry by Martha Grant Bruckner

Update for Joe, April 15 - 21, 2024.

Continuing the image – the roller coaster ride this week was exciting but not fun.  The medical team has identified three pressing issues that they continue to address:

  • An apparent reaction to one of the anti-rejection drugs which has resulted in a need for blood and plasma. The original medication has been discontinued but other anti-rejection drugs are in place.
  • The continuing loss of fluid throughout Joe’s body. One proposed solution involved reconstructive microsurgery to close a specific wound, but as of this writing, it appears that such a surgery – if needed - will not happen for several days.
  • Ongoing sloughing of lung cells resulting in some breathing difficulty.

Joe is continuing to receive dialysis and sometimes (but not always) blood pressure support. We’re very pleased that blood pressure support has not been needed for several days.  That’s a very good development! In the next week he will likely receive more frequent bronchoscopies to gauge his lung improvement.

A major highlight of the weekend was a visit to Joe by Fr. Tom Fangman, who shared treasured prayers with Joe and Mary.

Joe’s medical team and his wide-reaching group of cheerleaders continue to provide essential support to Joe and his family.  Thanks for your prayers and messages of encouragement.

Author’s Note: Joe has been recognized for many (!) awards, from his high school and college successes to his many professional awards.  Winning Joe’s current battle will undoubtedly be his most difficult success, but one we will all celebrate for years to come! Fight on, Joe!
