Thank you to everyone who still continues to ask about Jesseca. It is hard to believe that on this day one year ago, we received the worst phone call of our lives (thank God and thank you to Kurt Schrader, so glad it was you on the other end of that call). A phone call no mother, sister or father should have to get. I (Miranda) created this CaringBridge to stay up to date with Jesseca and her progress throughout her recovery. When I was reading back at the posts and comments, I could not believe that her page had over 68,000 visits. The progress she has made is incredible, and we want to again share our thankfulness and give an update on Jesseca.

It is a bittersweet day for us as a family, as we continue to be grateful for what we have and what we have over come. It seems like it was just yesterday that we were sitting in the hospital room in the ICU, trying to put the pieces together and figure out what to do next. I honestly don’t think we would have been able to overcome this without the support of family, friends, the hospital staff, communities, and even strangers from afar. Personally, I gained a whole new respect for hospital employees, especially ICU nurses. The horror they see day to day is unbearable, and the strength they have to keep going as well as lead a life of their own outside of work is incredible.

We are grateful for each and every person that has followed Jesseca on CaringBridge, as well as those who have checked up on the rest of us. Each of you played a role in Jesseca’s recovery. Without you and your support, we all would not be where we are today.

Jesseca continues to have daily pain, she recently had the 5 1/2” screw removed from her back pelvis. This may or may not help her pain level, time will tell. Jesseca is scheduled next week for her 2nd neuro-pysch test, we will compare the results to the 1st one she had done in January. There is still so much healing to do, body, mind and soul.

Currently, Jesseca has decided to pursue a new dream of hers outside of Minnesota. She is getting ready to start a new chapter in her life as a college student in the Chicago area. She will be attending Harper College and majoring in business. She continues to run and workout as much as her body allows her to, as her passion for staying active continues.

As we turn the page and move on, we will never forget that tragic day. We encourage everyone to get behind the wheel safely, and drive like your loved ones are on the road as well. Leave a few minutes earlier so you are not late. Put the phone down and have someone else text or pull over to send a text. Be patient. The decisions you make behind the wheel may cost you your own life or someone else’s. Please think and drive smartly.

Lastly, Jesseca has asked the following of those who are reading this:

Please take some time this weekend and run or walk (if capable) 1.5 miles or more in honor of Jess and the passion that she has for running as well safe driving awareness. This mileage is significant as it is the longest she has ran without stopping, since the accident. She is increasing her strength slowly, but surely coming back to the passion she loves. Get outside with your neighbor, family, friends, etc. or even hit the treadmill. Whatever you can do would mean the world to her. And if you’re willing to share, comment what you did, we would love to see your efforts!!

Again, we want to thank you all for everything each and everyone of you have done. We wish you all happiness and strength as we endure these tough times. Stay safe and stay healthy!

With love,
⁃The Overlands
Scott, Darcy, Miranda and Jesseca
