I wasn’t going to update about his hearing test until after his scans in a couple of weeks but I’ve had quite a few people asking me how his hearing test went and also why he needs them.

So I’ll try to explain the best I can from a non medical perspective! Basically, one type of chemo in particular (Cisplatin) is known to cause high frequency hearing loss. This is a common chemo given for neuroblastoma, but one that Hudson never had. MSK used Carboplatin instead of Cisplatin and that was one reason we wanted to switch as soon as we did. Obviously hearing loss was nothing if it meant saving Hudson’s life, but after much prayer, we knew that we wanted to not only save his life but give him the best quality of life. We truly felt like God was giving us a different path than we started. Even though he didn’t get the most known chemo to cause hearing loss, his body still went though so much trauma that he could have hearing loss from other chemo. This isn’t an issue for teenagers and adults because their hearing is often developed enough by the time they start chemo (if they get diagnosed later in life). Chemo kills the little hairs that sound vibrates off in little warriors’ ears and it causes hearing loss. Often leading to hearing aids. If hearing aids were needed in order to save his life, we’d do it. That was never in question.

There was a really meaningful conversation I had with Dr. G early on in this fight when he told Bryan and I that there were a lot of things doctors told his parents that never came to fruition and that Hudson cannot be looked at by statistics and numbers.

Every test, scan, exam, etc. I remember that statement and I always remember that Hudson is not a number. He’s not a statistic.

Hudson passed his hearing test with flying colors today. In fact, he was above average in his high frequency and normal hearing.

Hudson continues to be nothing short of a miracle. I’m in awe of him everyday because I know when I look at him, I am looking at God’s
love and faithfulness. I just know that God has huge plans for this boy.
