Sammi has a tendency of doing that to me too -- going to her doctors and seeming fine one minute, then having something pop up as soon as we get home. I swear you cute little things do it on purpose.

Hi 'ya, buddy!

I'm so happy to hear that you're doing so well in your therapy. Therapy works wonders, doesn't it? All of the therapies Sammi is in (especially speech) have been absolutely amazing for her and it's wonderful knowing yours are working out just as well for you.

I loved looking at those pictures of you in your swing, sweetie. You look so happy in it! And it looks like lots of fun! I wonder if one can be made big enough for me to fit into. That'd be cool.

I'm behind you 100% when it comes to feeling bad for everyone who has been affected by Hurricane Katrina. I have family in Louisiana and I was as worried as I could have possibly been about them until I heard they were fine. As far as eating is concerned, the same thing crossed my mind as far as Sammi goes. She eats two things and two things only. What would I do if devestation like Katrina hit us? What would Sammi eat? The thought has crossed my mind more than once and I'm almost ready to go to the store and buy them out of Sammi's soup -- stockpile it "just incase."

Hoping all of you are feeling MUCH better by now and are sickness free!

I was thinking about all of the victims of the hurricane today as well. Thank God for the Red Cross. We were discussing the situation in my poverty law class last night and discussing how hard it must be for anyone to get any help, nevermind a child with special needs! I wish we could just bring a family here.

Thanks for sharing the news. This disease is so weird, it is great to hear that the doctors think Caden will progress. I think that Caden's presentation and Alex's are very similar; both have never regressed. We are praying for you guys!

Wow! You guys have had quite the busy summer! If I haven't told you already, congrats on the new job and I am glad it is going good. I am thankful for you that you did get to see Dr Shoeffner (sp?). The thought of more children or not having more children is so hard. All you can do is place it in God's hands and trust in Him to know what is best. Also, don't worry about over reacting! A friend of mine read through her daughter's medical records and on several of them was "reassure mom". I am sure that if I read through Alec's I have plenty of "reassure mom" notations also! One last thing: CONGRATS CADEN on the rolling!!!!

Oh, Caden is so adorable. This was our first visit here and we will definately be back. I know so many of us have funny "poop" stories, but mine I believe takes the cake. As some of you know, I have been married once before, but only for 9 months. It was a very messy, very ugly divorce, and thank God there were no children involved. His new wife is a very pretty lady, she works for Glamour Shots picture studio, so anyone can be pretty who knows how to do their makeup like that. So anyway, it had been about 2 years or so since I had any contact with my ex, or his wife (who by the way was the lady he left me for) so we see them out somewhere, some resturant, and his ex asked if she could hold Bethany. Bethany had pooped, and we did not know it. It had went all the way up her back. She had a onepiece jumper on, and it was all the way up her back. So, when the lady picked her up and laid her back on her, the poop got all over the lady as well. So, my beautiful baby girl pooped on my ex husband's wife, (and again, the lady who he left me for). She was covered in poop, and of course, it was a very expensive outfit she had on. I offered to pay for drycleaning, but of course she didn't let me. She tried to act like it was no big deal, but you could see the steam boiling from her head! LOL! Kid's and Poop! We just have to love them. I guess we all have a funny "poop" story!!
Just thought that I would give you a little laugh, since you shared with us about the your story.
We'll be back again soon to check on your family, and we will sure be keeping them in our prayers!!

It's so good to hear that you're still drinking from that cup of yours and that you're enjoying so many different kinds of food. Beef & bean burritos, huh? Gee, that must smell nice coming out

It seems like you and Sammi have something in common -- she LOVES swimming in pools too! She didn't like it at first either, but now you can't get her out of a pool once she's in. This weekend is supposed to be VERY hot in our neck of the woods, so we might just have to take a trip up to my Dad's house to do some swimming.

Those pictures your Mom shared of you are just too precious! You look too sweet wading around in that pool. But you didn't like your sunglasses? I thought you looked cool in them. Sammi has a couple of pairs of Spongebob sunglasses that she loves wearing. She'll wear them around the house and outside. If we send you a pair, will you look a little happier about wearing them?

Sure there are lots of things I could do around here to improve the look of my house, but you two are great examples of why I don't do anything. I get enough headaches from daily things that go on around here -- I don't need anymore with home improvements. I hope everything gets straightened out for the two of you.

I apologize for being late in wishing you a happy one, but you've been on my mind A LOT. Does that really mean you'll be 2 in 4 more months? Wow! What is with you kids and feeling the need to grow up so fast? I swear you just get cuter and cuter everyday. Is that possible?

I know the news recieved is a horrible shock and much of what has been read has been hard, but there are people with mitochondrial disorders who develop fewer symptoms and do very well in life. Keep the faith in the fact Caden is doing very well now and hopefully forever.

Dear Caden and family .. your diagnosis came finally! I know how much you have longed and dreaded at the same time "knowing" what was going on. I pray that you can take the information and process it and move on. We are behind you in many ways. We just sent off a skin biopsy from Emily to Mayo Clinic. Now the waiting starts. If nothing comes from that, we move on to the muscle biopsy. Like you, we are so eager to know WHAT is ailing Emily. So that we can better her to the best possible. But please remember, no matter what technical term the docs give to Caden, his is still a very unique, individual boy and God can do things in him that the textbooks would never lead you to expect. I was so saddened to hear of Caden's diagnosis. I can't believe it, how was this Dr. so sure in the beginning and now has changed his thinking due to the results. I can't imagine all the thoughts you are having since finding out. But knowing is better and now we can focus on helping Caden be the best he can be. When I saw your entry on the mito site I was sure you'd say Caden was mito-free. I'm sick over his dx!!
Remember Kirk has probable Complex 1 def too.
I guess we have one more brave little soldier to add to our mito army! Caden, Kirkland's fighting really hard and is making a big difference here in out town. His Mito March: Kure for Kirkland is happening May 29th and it's bigger than we ever had expected. The town has embraced our cause and I think our proceeds are really going to help the mito researchers advance their studies. We'll continue to fight until they find a cure!!!

You are in our prayers as you guys process all of this. Believe me, we know it is not easy. I don't know if you've seen an immunologist at all, but it has been a Godsend for us. Patrick has a deficient immune system and he put him on a daily regimen of amoxicillin, which has helped immensely. One of the best things you can do is try and keep him healthy. If I could give you one piece of advice, it would be to try and not look at his disease any differently than you did before. First off............

HAPPY 19 MONTHS, BUDDY!!!

I'm glad to hear you and your Grandparents had such an excellent time together this weekend. Did you play some fun games together? Did you get to go outside at all? For the 7th weekend in a row (ok, it hasn't been that long, but it feels that way) it rained in our neck of the woods, so poor Miss Samantha had to deal with staying inside and being bored. We are so happy that Caden is doing well! I would love to know more about the taping that he is doing. We are about to begin clinical based PT for the first time and are very excited. Alex does use a walker but I think it would be really beneficial for him to do the treadmill etc. that you can only get in a clinic setting. Please keep us posted on how that is going!

Dear Caden&Family,
A very dear friend of mine found out just a few months ago that their precious little girl is suffering from MLD. It as been so devasting for her. But she remains strong and continues to work with me as a pediatric ER nurse. Vanessa is now 2 years old, cannot see anymore, has no motor movement at all, but has the most inlighting smile. Jen says " everyday I spend with her is a blessing from above, no matter what kind of day it was. Probably soon Vanessa will be leaving us for this better place, but she will always remain in our hearts" Don't despare, keep your faith our children are all little angels with a purpose. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers always.

That little smiley face I put up beside your name is what I look like this morning. Why? (you might be asking). Because my wonderful Sammi decided to wake up (and stay up I might add) at 4:30 this morning. Did you sleep through the night like a good little boy? I think Sammi wanted to have a play date with you this morning -- that's why she woke up. Are you doing anything special for Mother's Day? We're having a small cookout in our backyard, but that's about it. I really don't want anything elaborate for myself -- just having my little girl and my Mom with me on Sunday will be plenty for me.

I'm sure you're happy with the picture phone Jeremy gave you. I'm kind of afraid of getting one for myself. I can figure out little things (setting the time on our VCR, changing batteries in one of Sammi's toys -- I'm a pro at that!, etc.), but I don't know if I'd be able to figure out how to take pictures with a phone. I hope you have MUCH better luck than I would have.

I can't imagine how hard it's been waiting for those results. I hope they are in soon and the Dr will see you. I get so angry with their office staffs sometimes!! That book you are talking about sounds great, I am going to get it myself. I deal with the same guilt every day. If I don't do enough therapy on Emily myself, I feel bad. I know only too well the anticipation of the last weeks waiting for those results. They were sent right to our house, and we too struggled with the follow up appt. It seems once the tests are done they don't want you to come back. I have a feeling it's the office staff. They were not very professional and actually a little rude. Your stories from the book were great, we struggled with the whole therapy thing too, when is enough enough? We decided that we are only human and we need a break too, so if we feel like doing therapy we do it and if we don't do it, we are not going to feel guilty about. We only can do the best we know how and it's just not worth beating yourself up about it. I believe God is in control and if we take the amount of time that we might be doing therapy and put it into prayer it's the same thing, at least that's my philosophy. Dear Sweet Baby Boy, Caden: MawMaw and PaPa had a great time with you this past weekend. We enjoyed having Vicki part of the time too. We thought Mommie and Daddy needed a little free time. Our weather is so changeable around here it is hard to know whether to take Caden out or not.

I've always wanted to take a scrapbooking class. Funds have been VERY tight these days, so I haven't been able to enroll in anything but I would love to soon. Let me know how the class goes if you end up taking part in it. I bet it'll be a good time.

It was great seeing your message in Sammi's guestbook tonight. Don't worry about being MIA for awhile -- it happens to the best of us. I usually end up disappearing during February vacation, April vacation and here and there during the summer when Sammi is home. Sammi attends a sort of summer school, but the schedule is much different than it is during the school year. Don't worry about not being able to stop by too often -- your family is ALWAYS in our prayers and we know you haven't forgotten about us.

There is something psychological about being upright at a certain age. After Alex started being put in an upright position (via walker and stander) he started to really progress. Our little boy, who "developmental specialists" basically gave up on once they saw the mito diagnosis, now goes in his walker everywhere while his power wheelchair sits collecting dust! LOL Ok, he goes in it from time to time :) Some kiddo's rise to every challenge given them. Caden sounds like one of those children and if so, maybe the therapist is right on in her treatment. Of course, you always have to go with your gut. I am glad that Caden is feeling better and am praying for continued progress.

I just wanted to let you know that we have traveled to both Italy and Holland and you know what, neither one is a picnic (coming from the mom of a 7th grader, ugh!). The trips are very different from each other and also very much the same. With my 3 older kids I will have to worry about them drinking and driving, doing drugs, etc. Patrick will always be safe from that, but we will always have to make decisions for him and those decisions can be life or death also. Great news about your knee feeling somewhat better. Aleve usually helps with my knees and wrist when they're bothering me. I hope it continues to feel better and doesn't give you anymore problems.

I can't thank you enough for sharing "Welcome to Holland" and "Celebrating Holland" on Caden's page. I had never read either one before, but I can completely relate now that I have. I haven't had the chance to read "Celebrating Holland" yet (thanks to Miss Samantha), but I plan on doing so as soon as she's in bed. Thank you again, hon!

I'm sorry to hear about your knee bothering you. Jeff's Mom just had knee surgery for the same thing and Jeff also had it done years before we met. I also have arthritis in both of my knees. Let me start off by saying WAY TO GO CADEN!!!! You have hit some HUGE milestones! That is great! I have often laughed at myself because the things that I have cried about. Like the day that Collin held his bottle on his own (at age 4) Collin was 2 1/2 before he could sit on his own. We were told that he would not crawl, walk, or do much. Now he is walking with a walker. It takes baby steps but wow these guys are amazing!
I told Jason about Coach Bobby Knight and he is so jealous!

Hello! You had emailed a few days ago through a yahoo group and told me how to view pictures of Caden and hear more about your family and situation! He is BEAUTIFUL! It is so nice to hear from others who are dealing with such similar things. It is interesting that you are from Texas! We will be in Texas in early June. My husband's family are in Del Rio, Crane, Seminole, and a few other places. My father-in-law has a ranch way out in the middle of what seems like nowhere. . .I guess some places not too far from it are Langtry, Comstock, Dryden, Pumpville. They go to San Angelo usually if they need medical care. We lived in College Station for a short time. I'll look forward to keeping in touch and seeing how things are going with Caden! I think if we lived closer. . .Caden and my little Collin would be great buddies!

Hi there. I was reading your post about Caden not being able to sit up and I though "hey, I wonder if that seat I saw in the OneStepAhead catalog would work for him." Lo and behold, I scrolled down and there it was in your pictures! I am a huge catalog searcher because these types of products have helped my son so much. I remember when my son Alex first started saying the vowel sounds! It is such an amazing thing. In some ways, we lower our expectations (sort of a defense mechanism I think) which makes these milestones that much greater to us! Anyway, I am so happy that things are going well for Caden. Dearest Caden, Vicki and Jeremy: Today was such a nice day although Abilene , which is about one and one half hours away, had 2 inches of snow last night. The weatherman said it was a new record for Abilene..a white Easter!!

You were the cutest in your little new Easter suit. We will all not soon forget that precious face when Aunt Kim gave you the Easter bunny that sings, wiggles his ears and pats his foot!! Soooo cute!! A "Hey, this thing is pretty cute", a big grin, and then " I am just not to sure about this thing" look. We enjoyed going to church and having lunch with you. Aunt Kim made us strawberry shortcake when we got back to Cadens' house, which was very good..Caden likes whipped cream and ice cream, sometimes.

Glad you'all have had a few days off to rest up from the trip to Atlanta and to get a few things done around the house.

Looking forward to the benefit next weekend and praying for good weather.
We love you'all and pray for God to send his blessings and
help to heal our sweet Caden and to give all of you strength.

Hello, I came to your site through Cheyenne's and hers through the Joiners' who are friends of ours. I have a grandson named Caden who is as cute and sweet as your Caden must be. He is so pretty (even though boys are not supposed to be thought of as pretty, he is!) As I live in the Lubbock area (Levelland), I am very familiar with the Lady Raiders and Coach Marsha Sharp. Our children are VERY similar, they even have almost the same birthdate!! :) I am very happy to hear that the "BEST" dr doesn't think that Caden has something degenerative. That is WoNdErFuL news!! I am going to talk to our neurologist next week about going somewhere else for a second opinion or a more indepth metabolic look. We have a metabolist here but he is stumped, as is the geneticist. Same as Caden, they seem to have ruled out mito disorders but are still sure it's metabolic. What a frustrating journey this is, huh! Lots of support to you, and I hope that you get some answers soon.

Kari has been tested for some metabolic things as well, but the ones she was tested for came back negative. We are now waiting for more genetic testing results. I just hate waiting, don't you??? We already know she has cerebral palsy and some other stuff, but now we need more answers.

Dearest Caden: Mamaw and Papa are so glad this ordeal is over for you. Talked to your Daddy in Atlanta this morning and he said you had a very good night and rested good. He said it is very yucky weather there today, cold and rainy. He said the high was to be about 40 degrees. Mamaw hopes you stay dry and warm.. Both Daddy and Mommy told me it was a good thing I was not there for the lV ordeal. Dad said you held your breath and turned blue and passed out 3 times but that thank goodnes they had you on the monitors.,,Maybe you will not have to go through that again! Vicki just called me from Atlanta and said she, Jeremy and CADEN have landed safely. They flew out of DFW in Dallas at 2:13 this afternoon and arrived in Atlanta at about 4:45 P.M. Our little man is down for his afternoon nap. He and Mamaw had a late sleep-in this morning...I think about 8:30, which is unusual. Papaw just let us sleep. Caden took a late afternoon nap yesterday afternoon. One and one-half hours yesterday morning and 2 and 1/2 hours in the afternoon and needless to say, he did not want to go to bed last night.

We have so enjoyed keeping him and seeing his sweet smile everyday(until time for medicine). Know how much Mommy and Daddy needed this little break. Caden has the strongest little spirit. I guess I should know how the day goes, I keep him quite a lot, but when it is several days at a time it seems like the whole day is spent giving him meds.
He has gotten to where when he sees that syringe comming, the tears start to flow. He has Previcid and applesauce first thing then Tegretol,3 times a day , then you have to fit in his antibotic-twice a day, then cough syrup and ear drops. Poor baby!! Hopefully, if this rainy weather here in Texas ever clears up, these allergies and cough will clear up too. We are having unusually wet weather.
Mamaw and Papaw are praying for a safe trip to Atlanta for Caden and Mommy and Daddy in about 8 days. We pray that some knowledge will be gained about Cadens problems..We all love this little angel more than anyone can know. We hate to see him have to go and have these proceedures performed, but know that we all must have some answers to help Caden.

I'm not sure how I got to your page, but I have to say that Caden is absolutely a doll!!! The pictures with Santa are precious. I've read some of your journal, and hope that someday soon, someone can make a diagnosis for you. Knowing what you are dealing with is half the battle. My husband and I have 4 children, a 14 year old boy, 11 year old boy, 5 year old boy with leukemia and a 14 month old daughter. Each one is precious and a gift from God.

Dearest, sweet, Caden: Mamaw and Papaw love you so much and are all busy getting info. on your comming trip to Atlanta.
Papaw and I were in that HUGE airport several years ago and almost missed our flight.
We have enjoyed going to Daddys' Lady Hawks' ballgames and wish them the best of luck in the upcomming tournament. We pray for the complete healing of your little mind and body. God is good and we are seeing some good signs everyday of progress you are making. We will take gratefully whatever we can get. You have the most precious personality, we miss your sweet smile and little sparkly laugh when we do not get to see you. My name is Tina Moore and I help maintain Jenn Swanson's website. I have been looking in on yours ever since Jenn found you. I have identical twin daughters whom were born @ 31 weeks gestation and lived in ICU for the first 3 months of their lives, then on heart monitors for another 6. They were diagnosed with a rare blood disorder that would affect them until early adulthood. I can fully appreciate what you are going through as a mother of a sick child. I know their are times when it all just seems to be too much and you wonder how you are going to get through it, but somehow you wake up the next day and just do it all over again. In reading your journal I can see you are one of those whom will fight to your last breath to get answers. Keep fighting!! One day there will be an answer! I will pray for you that one will come soon! Thank-You for adding Jenn's name to your site. I am sooo touched by all the well wishes from so many people, so many strangers.

That makes my day!!!! Judy is like my second mom. She was my PT from day one litterally. She came to the hospital and saw me at 6wks old and after I finally got out of there I started going to WTRC til I was 13yrs. old. When we were there for Christmas we went up there to see if we could see her and we did, but only for a split second 2 different times. She's so hard to catch since she's doing home visits and everything. She's so good. I always enjoyed going even though some of the stuff was doing was , but it was good for me and I felt better after doing it. I hate to admit this, but I still wish I was doing it (you can tell her that). I had some PT up here for something, but only for a month or so this summer. I wish that sometime when I go back to San Angelo during the week I could work with her, but she incredibly busy now (you can tell her that too). I got to see Charis too so that was fun. I can't figure out who Tammy and Jean Anne are though? Anyway, That's AWESOME!!!! When do ya'll go back? Tell her you've corresponded with me and tell her hi. Who else do you know or have come in contact with there? I love when you talk about Caden going there and what they are doing with him. I can TOTALLY relate.
