Magan Smith <carebear121185@yahoo.com> San Angelo, - Thursday, January 5, 2006 5:21 PM CST Dearest Sweet Caden, Vicki and Jeremy: What a wonderful Christmas we had!!!! Although I have vowed just to stay at my own home next year for Christmas. It was really quite a job to take all of that "stuff" four or five hundred miles(for an old lady, that is) I know Mommy and Daddy and Aunt Kim and Uncle Bryan and Aunt Nanaw loved the skiing and snow. We were really hoping for snow Everywhere, but to no avail, it was even warm in Ruiodoso. Mamaw and Papaw are so glad that you are feeling so much better, we were all worried. Caden, you looked so CUTE in your little Chistmas suit and stocking cap on Christmas morning!! Our entire family is praying for your continued good health and for some miracles!! We all love you so much, Caden, and sorry for Mommy and Daddy, we spoil you rotten and love doing it!! A little secret...I think Mommy and Daddy do some of that spoiling too, AND everyone you know. Happy New Year to you Caden and wishes for the happiest of days to come. Love you so much, Mamaw and Papaw Pat Lee <donlee@web-access.net> Coleman, Texas USA - Wednesday, January 4, 2006 3:00 PM CST Happy New Year you guys!!! I'm so glad you guys had a good time. I know what you mean about altitude sickness. We went to Pike's Peak while we were still living in New Mexico and I felt so awful while I was up there that I didn't enjoy one minute of it. Well, I sent the Eli's Angels package right before Christmas. I was very excited to get that sent off. I hope they received it okay. We sent it in Caden's honor! Isn't that just crazy about all the fires! My mom says they're about to burn off the map down there! My little brother, Paul, is an EMS and is either busy working the ambulance (smoke inhalation, burns, etc.) or he's helping the volunteer FD put out fires! He said the one close to Gorman was really bad as well! Pray for rain! I'm up here at school today but don't really have to report back until Monday. I just have so much to do I couldn't wait that long! Well, I had better go. Best of luck on the resolutions. I definately have some of my own! Have a great week and write when you get a chance! Glad to hear that Caden is doing so well! MaryBeth & Alex MaryBeth <marybethlefevre@aol.com> - Sunday, September 25, 2005 7:59 PM CDT Hello Caring Bridge Friends, I loved the video of swimming. I know it has been awhile since I have signed pages, I have been very consumed with work and some classes I am taking. Not to mention the never ending Family Loving Chaos. However, this includes is my cry for help! I just learned that a dear friend's son who has ALL has relapsed! He has been in remission and receiving treatment for 2 years and 4 months to the day, when they got the news. As a Cancer Parent this is the worse thing to hear. Every day we try to go along with our daily activities. We believe with all our hearts and Faith that our babies are 1 day closer to hearing the blessed words that they are considered "cured". This was just a devastating reminder that each day is equally as possible that it could go the other direction! I can't describe the fear I am feeling now for their family as well as our own! Susie Breuer the mother of *Bryce*, is a remarkable woman and they have a remarkable family! She is the mother of five great boys and an equally wonderful husband. They live just north of Rochester, MN. Bryce is 7 years old now and was diagnosed just before his 5th Birthday. When we were still new to the Medical World of ALL and I had been asking a lot of questions about our boys and how we can try to keep their lives somewhat normal. With Susie's permission, one of the nurses introduced us when we happened to be there for appointments at the same time. She was great, we spent many hours on the phone comparing notes and supporting each other. On Sierra’s 6 month anniversary of her diagnosis we had a blood and marrow registry drive in Sierra's honor. The Breuers drove all the way from Goodhue to donate and get registered. We had connected many times when Sierra and Bryce were on the same appointment schedules. And there were a few times when Sierra wasn't doing so well with her appointments and out of no where Susie would arrive armed with cheetos and get Sierra smiling again!! They have had us to their farm to play and as you can imagine the kids had a ball! My heart aches for their family and once again the overwhelming helplessness is taking over! So I did the first thing I could think of and that was to pray!!! And also ask everyone I knew to pray as well. I know we all have our own things going on but they could use all the well wishes and prayers they can get right now. Also some of you may know *Chance* He is a very strong young man who had Cancer when he was 3 but overcame it. He now suffers from numerous seizures. Despite his own battles he spends hours going to children’s sites and encouraging them. Not long ago his mother found out she had cancer, and yesterday I found out she earned her Angel Wings. I think it is our time to return some of that strength he as passed on to so many. This morning when the Lord opened a window to Heaven, he saw me, and he asked: "My child, what is your greatest wish for today?" I responded: "Lord, please take care of the person who is reading this message, their family and their special friends. They deserve it, and I love them very much". The love of God is like the ocean: you can see its beginning, but not its end. And you never want to turn your back on it! Lots of CB ((((Hugs)))) and ++++Prayers++++ to you and your family! I hope you guys are all feeling better. Vicki, I hope school has gotten off to a good start for you. I know how hard it is to change schools, especially at the last minute! Things are well for us, just fighting a few allergy attacks. Defoliation season around here with the cotton always gets us. Cary had a hornet sting him on the forearm Sunday and his arm swelled up huge. I was worried about it cutting off his circulation in his arm, but he was fine, which he reminded me of about 20 times so I would quit worrying. We did affectionately refer to him as Popeye for a couple of days before the swelling finally went down. It didn't slow him down much. I just didn't realize how allergic he was! Maybe it just normal, I don't know. Other than that, we are good. I always look forward to your new updates. I can't believe Caden is almost 2! How exciting! I'm so happy to hear that you're doing so well in your therapy. Therapy works wonders, doesn't it? All of the therapies Sammi is in (especially speech) have been absolutely amazing for her and it's wonderful knowing yours are working out just as well for you. I loved looking at those pictures of you in your swing, sweetie. You look so happy in it! And it looks like lots of fun! I wonder if one can be made big enough for me to fit into. That'd be cool. Vicki I'm behind you 100% when it comes to feeling bad for everyone who has been affected by Hurricane Katrina. I have family in Louisiana and I was as worried as I could have possibly been about them until I heard they were fine. As far as eating is concerned, the same thing crossed my mind as far as Sammi goes. She eats two things and two things only. What would I do if devestation like Katrina hit us? What would Sammi eat? The thought has crossed my mind more than once and I'm almost ready to go to the store and buy them out of Sammi's soup -- stockpile it "just incase." If I haven't told you already, congrats on the new job and I am glad it is going good. I am thankful for you that you did get to see Dr Shoeffner (sp?). The thought of more children or not having more children is so hard. All you can do is place it in God's hands and trust in Him to know what is best. Also, don't worry about over reacting! A friend of mine read through her daughter's medical records and on several of them was "reassure mom". I am sure that if I read through Alec's I have plenty of "reassure mom" notations also! One last thing: CONGRATS CADEN on the rolling!!!! Stephanie & Alec www.caringbridge.org/sd/alec <raisingwrestlers@iw.net> Harrisburg, SD - Thursday, August 25, 2005 10:50 AM CDT HEY CADEN AND FAMILY! Glad to read your new update. I thought you were just very busy, and I hoped that nothing was wrong--So glad everything is okay! Sounds like you got MOSTLY good news-especially about Caden's future! That is so interesting what he said about how well these kids seem to do after 2 years old! That definitely gives you a lot of hope! Caden is doing so good NOW! I'm sorry to hear about your chances for future children. Can they tell if it is mito DNA or recessive--will you ever know? Just wondering? I have people ask me all the time--What if its 50% chance, would you have another? These are hard questions and even harder decisions to make. Sometimes I think that if I get pregnant at 36 years old or older, then maybe God wants me to have another child, but it's so hard to know what the right thing to do is. I wouldn't want another child to go through what our precious Taylor has gone through. However, she is a blessing everyday--just as Caden is and every other child! WE ARE GOING TO ATLANTA NEXT WEEK FOR TAYLOR'S MUSCLE BIOPSY! Please pray for us!!! (Let me know where you guys have stayed before, if you get a chance!) Thanks for all the information. This was our first visit here and we will definately be back. I know so many of us have funny "poop" stories, but mine I believe takes the cake. As some of you know, I have been married once before, but only for 9 months. It was a very messy, very ugly divorce, and thank God there were no children involved. His new wife is a very pretty lady, she works for Glamour Shots picture studio, so anyone can be pretty who knows how to do their makeup like that. So anyway, it had been about 2 years or so since I had any contact with my ex, or his wife (who by the way was the lady he left me for) so we see them out somewhere, some resturant, and his ex asked if she could hold Bethany. Bethany had pooped, and we did not know it. It had went all the way up her back. She had a onepiece jumper on, and it was all the way up her back. So, when the lady picked her up and laid her back on her, the poop got all over the lady as well. So, my beautiful baby girl pooped on my ex husband's wife, (and again, the lady who he left me for). She was covered in poop, and of course, it was a very expensive outfit she had on. I offered to pay for drycleaning, but of course she didn't let me. She tried to act like it was no big deal, but you could see the steam boiling from her head! LOL! Kid's and Poop! We just have to love them. I guess we all have a funny "poop" story!! Just thought that I would give you a little laugh, since you shared with us about the your story. We'll be back again soon to check on your family, and we will sure be keeping them in our prayers!! Sending Prayers,, and Michelle/Angel_Wings & Bethany <VMGLPERRY@wmconnect.com> Knoxville, TN - Monday, August 1, 2005 10:54 PM CDT I love the movie. Caden is so adorable. I have had many experiences with the poop LOL. Sorry it happened to you in Red Lobster though! Caden is always in my prayers. Tina & Lance <lancejrmommy@comcast.net> - Sunday, July 31, 2005 4:36 PM CDT HEY CADEN AND FAMILY! Just had to tell you that WE LOVED THE MOVIE! That was precious!!! Is that a regular life jacket or a special kind of flotation device? May I ask where you got it? Taylor has had water therapy once, and we are planning to do it more often, so I was wondering where we could get one of those. It looks like it works really well. Unfortunately, we can relate to the poop incident also!!! One day, when I (and everything around me) was covered in poop - I tried to imagine a celebrity or someone very high society, scrubbing poop out of clothes and cleaning up their baby! I had to laugh!!! I'm sure that they all have nannies to do that sort of thing! Sometimes, I think how funny it is that I have a college degree in Finance, and I "inspect" and clean up poop on a daily basis! BUT I WOULDN'T TRADE MY JOB, FOR ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD!!! Our precious angels really put our lives in perspective, don't they? HOPE YOU HAVE A GREAT DAY AND WEEK!!! I got your website from the mito message board (I think!). My name is Sonya Murray, and I have a special angel named Taylor (who is about the same age as Caden). Her website is www.caringbridge.org/visit/tay-tay. My husband's name is Scott and we live in Smyrna, Tennessee. I have spent so much time reading your story and your journal entries. So much of it sounds so familiar to us. I love your website, it is full of information, the cutest photos, and inspiration. CADEN IS THE CUTEST BOY, I THINK THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN! I check your site all the time to see what therapies, toys, and equipment he is using. You have given me so many ideas. Taylor is suspected to have a mitochondrial disorder also. We are in the process of getting everything approved to go to Atlanta, see Dr. Shoffner, and get a muscle biopsy. We are very anxious to find out something. I hope that the vitamins really help Caden - they say sometimes they take a while, and that you might not "see" the benefits, but they may help in ways that are not visible. He looks like he is doing great! Well anyways, I just thought I would finally sign your guestbook, since I read it constantly! We admire your strength and positive outlook! You truly inspire all of us! Have a Great Day! (((HUGS))) Lauren & Emma <markhamfamily@msn.com> - Friday, June 24, 2005 4:05 PM CDT Caden It's so good to hear that you're still drinking from that cup of yours and that you're enjoying so many different kinds of food. Beef & bean burritos, huh? Gee, that must smell nice coming out It seems like you and Sammi have something in common -- she LOVES swimming in pools too! She didn't like it at first either, but now you can't get her out of a pool once she's in. This weekend is supposed to be VERY hot in our neck of the woods, so we might just have to take a trip up to my Dad's house to do some swimming. Those pictures your Mom shared of you are just too precious! You look too sweet wading around in that pool. But you didn't like your sunglasses? I thought you looked cool in them. Sammi has a couple of pairs of Spongebob sunglasses that she loves wearing. She'll wear them around the house and outside. If we send you a pair, will you look a little happier about wearing them? Vicki & Jeremy Sure there are lots of things I could do around here to improve the look of my house, but you two are great examples of why I don't do anything. I get enough headaches from daily things that go on around here -- I don't need anymore with home improvements. I hope everything gets straightened out for the two of you. It is a really nice deal. Patrick is on COQ10, Carnitor, Vit. E and Vit. C and all of it comes from Mayo in liquid form, and they just mail it to us. Just thought I would pass along this info. You can go on their website to get the phone no. Email me if you want more info. or if you have any questions. Also, another little tip, if you go to the hospital for any procedures, make sure to bring your own supplements, we've found they don't always have them on hand, or they are not in liquid form. Our primary insurance does not cover these supplements, but medical assistance does with a doctor's note. We needed to fight it a little bit, but it paid off. The Vit. E alone is $1200 a month. Love, hugs and prayers, Barb <barbilens@yahoo.com> La Crosse, WI USA - Thursday, June 9, 2005 4:12 PM CDT Vicki, I found Caden's site through another child's caringbridge site some time ago. I have been following Caden's story as I read that you recently came to Atlanta for his muscle biopsy. I live in Atlanta and my son has mito too. We prayed for an answer for so long as to what was going on with my son and then we got his diagnosis I was devastated. Then I realized while it was not the answer I was looking for, it was in fact an answer. We then knew what we were facing and what complications to be looking for. We also joined the UMDF chapter and became involved with an extroidinary group of children and their families. Caden is beautiful and reminds me of my son in that they both have beautiful big eyes. The disease however affects them very differently...I have come to realize that is how this disease works. I love your poems on the site..Keep them coming. I will keep Caden and your family in my thoughts and prayers. Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions or just want to talk. I have received so much support from a family that lives in California whose daughter had mito with similar issues as my son, and realize that we all have something to give one another. My son received his diagnosis almost two years ago and I must say that it does get easier with time. My son too has a carepage and if you would like the site name and e-mail address I will send it to you. I hope you have a relaxing and healthy summer. Houston, TX USA - Wednesday, May 25, 2005 1:29 AM CDT Hi guys! Glad to hear you had a good weekend and YEY! only a few more days of school to go. I'm emailing you Emma's doctor's name & number...I have no idea if he is known for his mito knowledge, but perhaps if he isn't, someone else in his group practice is. Anyway...I'll email that to you. How frustrating--the drs can't see you for soooo long AND that Dr. S not until August. I know it's not him, and it's typical...but where is the compassion? I cannot imagine not having special time set aside for patients w/ new dx's, especially mito. Keep the faith in the fact Caden is doing very well now and hopefully forever. Anonymous - Friday, May 20, 2005 11:00 PM CDT Dear Vicki, Jeremy, and Caden, This news was certainly very shocking to hear. I can't imagine what you must be feeling. This must be disheartening to learn about, but at the same time, you are always looking on the positive side of things and thanking God for His help. You two are amazing pillars of strength to the rest of us. Thank you for providing us with links to mito disorders, that we might learn more and have a better understanding. All I know is that Caden seems to be doing well right now, and I'm so happy to hear of all his progress, and I can't wait to hear more!!! Good luck with the kinesiotaping. I know how much you have longed and dreaded at the same time "knowing" what was going on. I pray that you can take the information and process it and move on. We are behind you in many ways. We just sent off a skin biopsy from Emily to Mayo Clinic. Now the waiting starts. If nothing comes from that, we move on to the muscle biopsy. Like you, we are so eager to know WHAT is ailing Emily. So that we can better her to the best possible. He is the most adorable and sweet angel we could ever hope for. I have flashbacks to an old movie call "Lorenzo's Oil" every time I think about what you are going through and how hard you and working for Caden. God has blessed him with the "perfect parents" for this trial of life. We all admire both of you and just wish we could fix it, too. Our hearts break with yours every time there is a setback and we rejoice with you over every little triumph. I think that's how it's supposed to be. I'm asking a lot of CaringBridge kiddies that I know to do Sammi and I a favor this weekend and (of course) I just had to ask you too. If you're able to, do you think you could go outside and have LOTS of fun sometime this weekend? For what feels like the 100th weekend in a row, it's supposed to rain around us. Miss Samantha LOVES to go outside and play, but we haven't been able to because of all this yucky rain. We hope you're able to go out and have tons of fun. Vicki Wow! Just checking in, and Vicki--you are AMAZING, to say the least. Most people would be barely functioning at this point, just trying to make sense of things, question why, and be angry. I'm sure you've felt all of that throughout this journey, but you amaze me in your ability to remain so eloquent in the midst of all this. As you have been blessed to have Caden, he is blessed to have such a strong & caring mother. I hope you can get to Atlanta soon, and also to Mayo for a 2nd opinion, I understand that COMPLETELY. And--that conference would be wonderful as well. I'll be praying for those 3 things to happen, and of course I'm praying for you guys always. I know what you mean about having a diagnosis...I'm on that teeter-totter everyday, right now I think if it is Rett's, I may not want to know--at least not just yet. That sounds silly, but I know you understand what I mean by that. Give Caden BIG hugs from us. Take care. Our hearts go out to you all . You are in our Prayers . Kiss little man for us . Destiny , sends her butterfly kisses , she said Mommy don't cry Caden will catch my kisses and smile for his Mommy . Ashley Sanchez <adragonfly99@aol.com> Pineville , La - Wednesday, May 18, 2005 10:01 AM CDT Hi Vicki, Jeremy, and little Caden. Just got your e-mail from Toni and had to respond and let you know that we haven't forgotten you. You're never far from our thoughts, and know that we are praying for each of you. I hope that things are going well enough for you that maybe ya'll can bring Caden to the Fisher Reunion July 16th , so we can meet him. Everybody would love that. So, just know that we love you guys and we'll keep the prayers going up... Linda Linda Robinson <lcrobinson@mmm.com> May, TX USA - Wednesday, May 18, 2005 9:47 AM CDT Hi guys. I wish I could find the right words, but I can't. I read your email a few hours ago, visited the website, read up on the mito stuff...and I'd hoped by now I'd have something graceful to say. Please know how much we care about Caden, you all are in our thoughts & prayers. Caden's proven to be one who doesn't go by the book, and he surely is a fighter. I have no doubt that he'll make his very own path on this journey, and disregard what any books or doctors say. I wish we were closer, I'd come right over just to hug you & pray with you all. I honestly can't believe how you got the results, and what the response from Georgia has been. That's unfair, and certainly things could have been handled better. I hope you are able to speak to Dr. S. soon & figure it all out. I guess I did manage to say quite a bit, probably mostly rambling. Caden, you, & Jeremy, are in our thoughts & prayers. (((HUGS))) Take care. Lauren & Emma <markhamfamily@msn.com> - Tuesday, May 17, 2005 11:26 PM CDT Hi Caden, Vicki, and Jeremy, When I saw your entry on the mito site I was sure you'd say Caden was mito-free. I'm sick over his dx!! Remember Kirk has probable Complex 1 def too. I guess we have one more brave little soldier to add to our mito army! Caden, Kirkland's fighting really hard and is making a big difference here in out town. His Mito March: Kure for Kirkland is happening May 29th and it's bigger than we ever had expected. The town has embraced our cause and I think our proceeds are really going to help the mito researchers advance their studies. We'll continue to fight until they find a cure!!! All our love, Kelly and Kirkland xo Kelly Kilbride <kilbridek@yahoo.com> Georgetown, On Canada - Tuesday, May 17, 2005 10:19 PM CDT Hi Caden and family, Please know that we are praying for you and thinking about you always. I was reading Eli's web page and Ann put a link to Caden's saying you guys had a diagnosis. I will pray for Caden as I do for Eli. As I learn more of what mito is all about (due to being friends with the Kurtz's) I learn to hate the disease as much as they do. I pray for your sweet baby he is so beautiful you guys sound like wonderful parents so he is definately getting the best care and love possible. God Bless Kris Kris Vejvoda <kristine_vejvoda@csgsystems.com> Omaha, NE - Tuesday, May 17, 2005 4:06 PM CDT You are in our prayers as you guys process all of this. Believe me, we know it is not easy. I don't know if you've seen an immunologist at all, but it has been a Godsend for us. Patrick has a deficient immune system and he put him on a daily regimen of amoxicillin, which has helped immensely. One of the best things you can do is try and keep him healthy. If I could give you one piece of advice, it would be to try and not look at his disease any differently than you did before. He is still the same sweet Caden that he's always been and only God knows what's going to happen with him. I'm glad to hear you and your Grandparents had such an excellent time together this weekend. Did you play some fun games together? Did you get to go outside at all? For the 7th weekend in a row (ok, it hasn't been that long, but it feels that way) it rained in our neck of the woods, so poor Miss Samantha had to deal with staying inside and being bored. Of course she was happy as long as I had Playhouse Disney and her videos on. I hope you had a happy, happy weekend, sweetie! Vicki & Jeremy Glad to hear you two had a good weekend together! I've been dying to go to an Olive Garden, but we don't have one anywhere around us. One was suppose to open up in NH (not too far from us), but an Applebee's ended up going up instead. Grrrrrr!!!!!! Why? (you might be asking). Because my wonderful Sammi decided to wake up (and stay up I might add) at 4:30 this morning. Did you sleep through the night like a good little boy? I think Sammi wanted to have a play date with you this morning -- that's why she woke up. I probably could have used you to play in Sammi's room with her so I could have gotten an hour or so more of sleep. Jeremy Nice job picking out an awesome Mother's Day present for Vicki. If you're up to it, Jeff could use a few pointers on what to get me for Mother's Day. Vicki Are you doing anything special for Mother's Day? We're having a small cookout in our backyard, but that's about it. I really don't want anything elaborate for myself -- just having my little girl and my Mom with me on Sunday will be plenty for me. I'm sure you're happy with the picture phone Jeremy gave you. I'm kind of afraid of getting one for myself. I can figure out little things (setting the time on our VCR, changing batteries in one of Sammi's toys -- I'm a pro at that!, etc.), but I don't know if I'd be able to figure out how to take pictures with a phone. I hope they are in soon and the Dr will see you. I get so angry with their office staffs sometimes!! That book you are talking about sounds great, I am going to get it myself. I deal with the same guilt every day. If I don't do enough therapy on Emily myself, I feel bad. But sometimes, I just want to be a "mommy" and not a nurse, therapist, and teacher all in one. That books sounds really great. Thanks for sharing it with us! Sara and ~Emily~ <waffle13@sbcglobal.net> Southern California, - Thursday, May 5, 2005 8:51 AM CDT I know only too well the anticipation of the last weeks waiting for those results. They were sent right to our house, and we too struggled with the follow up appt. It seems once the tests are done they don't want you to come back. I have a feeling it's the office staff. They were not very professional and actually a little rude. Your stories from the book were great, we struggled with the whole therapy thing too, when is enough enough? We decided that we are only human and we need a break too, so if we feel like doing therapy we do it and if we don't do it, we are not going to feel guilty about. We only can do the best we know how and it's just not worth beating yourself up about it. I believe God is in control and if we take the amount of time that we might be doing therapy and put it into prayer it's the same thing, at least that's my philosophy. Okay, I took up enough room in your guest book, I'll be praying for you as you await your results, take care and God Bless, Bonnie www.caringbridge.org/mn/patrickluskey <bonniel@starband.net> Belle Plaine, MN USA - Wednesday, May 4, 2005 7:19 PM CDT I saw your website from Keith's and I just wanted to send a prayer for Caden Lesley Atlanta, ga - Wednesday, May 4, 2005 2:53 PM CDT Hi Williams Family!!
