This Valentine is not of the ordinary kind,

Dear Patti, Kevin and Hanna,

Today is the day our precious Haley earned her wings, and learned how to truly fly! Yes, while there were many tears and sadness here, the heavens rejoiced and she was welcomed into paradise. I just know she would want you to know how free she is, no more sickness, she's whole in every way.

I'll be praying for you all today, and remembering that beautiful little girl who graced this world with her love, her sweet smile, her caring ways, and BIG heart! What a gift Haley was to all of us!

Wow, I can't believe we are in June, where did this year go? I know this will be a month so full of memories, so many emotions for you all. My heart aches for your loss.

I'm so glad you were able to go and visit your friends, and get to see the people who cared for Haley. I know seeing you and Hanna must of brought back so many "GOOD" memories for them.

I'm so glad you are seeing so much of Haley in Hannah, because Patti, she is there. All of you were so close, and her spirit lives on in each one of you now. I think of you often.

I'll be praying extra hard for you all, and thinking of sweet Haley Girl all this month.

To my dearest Patti,

First, the picture, oh my...Haley is just BEAUTIFUL in every way!

My heart aches with you, and gosh, I can't and don't want to try to imagine what is like living without a part of you. I was like Hannah, watching my mom grieve over my brother. Patti, there is nothing you can do, but grieve. I know you are trying to be sensitive to Hannah and so many others, but your heart is broken.

She is dealing with it in her own way, like a child. Thank God I was not able to truly "absorb" it like my mom. It's funny it took me to become a mom to truly understand the depth of the pain she endured.

I will continue to pray for you and your family. Always remember, she IS THERE, just not in "body form". Her spirit is just as alive today as it was a year ago. She has changed her address, that's all. She's whole, she's healed, and if I know Haley from all you've shared, she's so busy helping others out now. She is that little girl you had before cancer.

I pray God will continue to give you the grace for each day. We love you and your family. The cook book sounds like a wonderful idea to celebrate Haley's life, I pray this is just the beginning of many more things you can do to keep honoring her.

Hey Patti,Kevin, and Hanna,
That poem was amazing, and it made me cry. I love you all, and so does the rest of my family, my mom made a big picture fram with Haley in it. I would really like to show you and I'm going to see if she can make one for you guys also. It is really hard to play sports without Haley there. I remember like 2-4 years ago, Haley was right there beside all of us girls helping us score soccer goals, and shoot baskets in basketball. I also remember her cheering us on, and i can still hear her cheering us on from the sidelines. Sometimes it feels like she is right there shooting the basket or the free throw. well, love you and hope to see you at church this sunday. Love you lots.

Hello Patti. It has been so long since I have looked at Haley's page. I was just on my lap top and saw that I still had it book marked! I am Patrick Cozad's mother "Patrick the Great"! I used to come visit pages a lot, but after I lost Patrick it just hurt way too bad, I would get so angry and so sad! I have a very hard time journaling on Patrick's page. I just don't know what to say, I too made the page for Patrick, people cared about him and loved him, I feel like my life is insignificant and nothing that people are interested in. But I loved your poem...every day is such a struggle, I feel your pain!

Hi Patty, Kevin, Angel Haley and Hanna, praying your pain will get easier for you all. That is so easy to type but I know in my heart that it is much harder to live and try to cope with the loss of a child. I have a little 10 yr. old girl name Haley and sometimes when I look at her I think of your Haley and how empty your hearts must feel. I wonder how you make it through a day of work, grocery shopping or trying to visit with friends. I also know the Lord will lift the pain in your hearts and replace it with warm feelings of your special girl. What a hero she is. What joy it must bring to know she belonged to you even though it was not long enough. I am sure Haley is lending a big hand in heaven because she had such a huge heart and soul on earth. Hello. I heard about you today from my nephew who met you while you were in Mexico. He was there with my brother who was receiving treatment the same time Haley was. He read me a letter from you and he cried the whole time he was reading it to me. He told me you'd included a picture of him and Haley, and it thrilled him to get it. He told me about this site and I have been reading your journal entries this afternoon. I am so sorry that this monster called cancer has devastated your lives, too, just like it has ours. (Sadly, my brother passed away in July.) I was comforted by the following and thought I'd share it with you:

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side
spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and
starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty
and strength. I stand and watch her until at length
she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where
the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then someone at my side says: "There, she is gone!"

"Gone where?"

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in
mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and
she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her
destined port.

Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the
moment when someone at my side says: "There, she is gone!,”
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout: "Here she comes!"

And that is dying.

I hope that comfort and peace will surround you.

patti & family, i have never signed your guestbook, but had been given haley's link through ellie anna from mt. i still check your updates at least every week, as well as some others. your husband asks, "why are you updating the journal?". i am sure that it is a form of therapy for you, and it had been such a huge part of your life for a long time. sort of a connection between you and the rest of the world out there. i myself have 3 daughters and cannot even begin to imagine the pain & suffering that comes with losing a child. i hope that hanna is coping. it makes things so difficult when there are 2, and then there is 1, especially when they were so close. you see their sadness as well as attempting to cope with your own. men & women deal with grief, pain, everyday living with much different ideas on how it should be done & how they should handle things. i have done lots of reading on how men think and react to things, and his comment is a very common one that i would expect from a man. i am sure that he is torn up inside, but thinks that it would be weak of him to continue to display sadness. it is just his way of coping. i think of your family often and pray that something positive can come from losing haley. i would truely be destroyed, but hopefully slowly heal and deal with just the everyday functions and living. i pray for you as a family to stay strong and cling to one another to help you through this most difficult time. i will continue to check on your progress and hope that things will be bright for you, in god's love.

Patti - I have to agree with the many postings that people do still want you to post and care about how your family is doing. I do check very regularly still, but just don't sign in often.

Actually, as I was getting ready to select your site from my favorites list it says "Haleygirl" and I thought for just a moment "I need a Hannah site" because I need Hannah updates. I come back to your site all the time to see how you and Hannah are doing. Even though we have never met, I feel you are part of my world now and knowing how things are going for you are an important part of my day. To put it simply, I am concerned for you and your family and the updates let me know how things are. If you stopped posting, I think many of us would be even more concerned for you. We have never met, but I continue to check your web site on a regular bases. I do so some because it was such a daily habit while Haley and your family were waging your fight against this beast called cancer. I do so now because I want to know that you are all doing okay. I lost my sister to cancer seven years ago. The loss and hurt that I feel is something that I will carry with me always. But I also can tell you that the smiles get easier, the good times come more often and that I feel very blessed to have had such a wonderful sister, even if only for a little while. As weird as it sounds it helps all us angel moms to know we are not going crazy...we all have the same pain and heartache and all handle it different ways. I think it is great for us to be able to share our feelings...even if it is with strangers we will probably never meet...a therapy in itself. I always check for updates...seldom do I write. I think as long as you like writing the updates then all of us love to read them. If it becomes too hard for you to write, then let them go, but only then. I think all of us like to check in and see how everyone is and love to hear your stories. We keep your family in our daily prayers and pray hard that some how God will bring you some comfort and peace. I don't know how but I know it seems to get easier for other families over time. I can imagine how hard it would be for me if we lost Joshua, but I don't think you truly EVER know until they are gone. I am so sorry that your family and others (way too many) have had to go down this path. It is not right and I have a very hard time trying to understand it all. I have a magnet on my fridge that says "I walk by Faith, not by sight" and I "try" to do that as we will never know why these terrible things happen. Things have a way of getting crazy here, and it gets difficult for me to sign into every guestbook. But I want you to know that I am here at least once if not more everyday looking for those precious updates of how you all are and what you are up to. Of course I wish I was much closer so we could sit down and have a heart to heart together, and let Wyatt and his Hanner-Nanner and Kevin have time to have their own fun.
I love seeing the new pictures that you have been adding, and so does Wyatt. Wyatt was able to recognize Hanna when she is younger in those pictures. And Haley, the smile, they are precious to us as well.
Hanna, THANK YOU! for the picture, which is in a place of honor on the fridge, and the letter. Wyatt was so very thrilled to have it. I promise to get an email off to you soon sweetie:)
Josh and Haley are an enormous part of the reason that I began fighting for research dollars for kids with cancer. Josh, with his sweet face, and Haley with that smile. They captured a piece of my heart. So many others have strengthened that decision.
Haley has touched the hearts of many. Now it is my turn to show those very people that more needs to be done in the fight against childhood cancer.
You know I am here if you need me. I wish we were closer, I'd send you that magic potion I have upstairs sleeping, recharging his little body, for his next day of adventure, to warm all of your hearts.

Hi Patti,
I usually just lurk on the caringbridge sites without signing guestbooks, but I wanted to tell you that I always love reading your updates on Haley's site. I feel like I sort of know her through your words, because you so often describe the impact she had on everyone around her, and the love she felt for everyone and they for her. The love in your family is just so evident and beautiful, and I think Haley have truly have been an amazing girl to be able to understand so profoundly and intuitively the importance of love and family and simplicity and pleasure, smiling and being with those closest to you. That's something I think a lot of us have trouble really appreciating even when we are much older. When I read the poem you put on the site today, I felt like I could relate to the words, but sometimes I think many of us find it difficult to carry these things through. I'm 21 and in university and I always feel like I should call up my parents to hear a story about their lives or just to talk, because time doesn't last forever, but often I don't do it. It's amazing to me how difficult some of these things can be for people, and it seems like something that your Haley was just wise enough to understand from the start. I love to look at the pictures of Haley and Hanna and see the huge smiles they always have on their faces, and I love to hear the updates about how all of you are doing. In a way they ARE updates about Haley. I was reading a book yesterday and one person says to another "When you lose someone very close to you to death, you discover that you somehow take on some of that person's best characteristics. I found that a particular comfort. And I believe that you will find in time that those special qualities that you associate with your father will become part of you as long as you live. You will find him living in yourself." I thought that idea was really beautiful and it's something I related to because my boyfriend Anthony died of cancer in March. I found that to be sort of true for me, and I can also see it in the updates you write. Haley obviously made so many people's lives - and people themselves - better in the short time she had. Hanna is clearly a strong, smart, fun-loving girl with a good head on her shoulders, and I'm sure her sister is helping her and will always be with her no matter where she goes or what she does. Anyway I'm sorry this is such a long entry, I just wanted to say that I love reading your entries and I really admire your daughter and I hope you continue writing them because she is still touching people (like me!) in so many ways. Oh, Patti - thank you so much for your guestbook entry. I just sat and cried. I am floored by the love and compassion you have for others. I am scared, and trying to minimize BonBon's symptoms. I want to be strong - and you and Darby and Diane and everyone else have been so strong. I wish I had a way to know FOR SURE what will be her new normal and what is something we need to investigate.
We are loving the "Teeny Weeny" dogs - as the kids call them. But, like I said in an entry on BonBon site, I couldn't help but get choked up at how much one of them looked like Haley's Comet. YOu all will always be in our thoughts and prayers (that sounds so cliche-ish, but, it is true!).

I found Haley's site back in the spring so I knew those girls of yours are pretty young things, but I just love the glimpse backwards into their childhoods. Both of them were gorgeous babies! Really, thank you so much for sharing. It helps us to "know" Haley better.

I'm so very sorry that your family must endure the heartache of not having your Haleygirl with you here on earth, and more than anything I wish I could somehow help that hurt you're going through. But I can't. All I can do is pray for all of you, and I promise to do so faithfully.

The Brave Little Soul
By: John Alessi

Not too long ago in Heaven there was a little soul who took wonder in observing the world. He especially enjoyed the love he saw there and often expressed this joy with God. One day however, the little soul was sad, for on this day he saw suffering in the world. He approached God and sadly asked, "Why do bad things happen, why is there suffering in the world?".

God paused for a moment and replied, "Little soul, do not be sad, for the suffering you see, unlocks the love in peoples hearts". The little soul was confused. "What do you mean", he asked. God replied, "Have you not noticed the goodness and love that is the offspring of that suffering? Look at how people come together, drop their differences, and show their love and compassion for those who suffer. All their other motivations disappear and they become motivated by love alone.

The little soul began to understand and listened attentively as God continued, "The suffering soul unlocks the love in people's hearts much like the sun and rain unlock the flower within the seed. I created everyone with endless love in their heart, but unfortunately most people keep it locked up and hardly share it with anyone. They are afraid to let their love shine freely, because they are afraid of being hurt. But a suffering soul unlocks that love. I tell you this-it is the greatest miracle of all. Many souls have bravely chosen to go into the world and suffer-to unlock this love-to create this miracle-for the good of all humanity.

Just then the little soul got a wonderful idea and could hardly contain himself. With his wings fluttering, bouncing up and down, the little soul excitedly replied, "I am brave; let me go! I would like to go into this world and suffer so that I can unlock the goodness and love in people's hearts! I want to create that miracle!

God smiled and said, "You are a brave soul I know, and thus I will grant your request. But even though you are very brave you will not be able to do this alone. I have known since the beginning of time that you would ask for this and so I have carefully selected many souls to care for you on your journey. Those souls will help you create your miracle; however they will also share in your suffering. Two of these souls are most special and will care for you, help you and suffer along with you, far beyond the others. They have already chosen a name for you.

God and the brave little soul shared a smile, and then embraced. In parting, God said, "Do not forget little soul that I will be with you always. Although you have agreed to bear the pain, you will do so through my strength. And if the time should come when you feel that you have suffered enough, just say the word, think the thought, and you will be healed.

Thus at that moment the brave little soul was born into the world, and through his suffering and God's strength he unlocked the goodness and love in people's hearts. For so many people dropped their differences and came together to show their love. Priorities became properly aligned. People gave from their hearts. Those that were always too busy found time. Many began new spiritual journeys-some regained lost faith-many came back to God. Parents hugged their children tighter. Friends and family grew closer. Old friends got together and new friendships were made. Distant family reunited, and every family spent more time together. Everyone prayed. Peace and love reigned. Lives were changed forever. It was good. The world was a better place. The miracle had happened. God was pleased."

Haley is a brave soul and lives on in the hearts and minds of so many. Wishing you comfort and peace in the new year.

Hi Mathis family...stopping by to wish you all a Merry Christmas. Reading through your entries are so much my own thoughts. I had a hard time too shopping as I always bought Gage and Beau's clothes in two's...different colors but usually the same, people would sometimes ask if they were twins. You would buy one and have to get the other one the same. It was even harder wrapping gifts last night for some reason...just squeezed my heart I guess. I would still love to make your family your Haley Bear. I gave Gage's parents and our siblings their bears for Christmas. There were a lot of tears but they were delighted to have something to hug, hold and have the memories. May year 2006 somehow bring us brighter days. Hugs from western Nebraska.

Wow what a week! Should I say what an emotional week. I can not begin to imagine what it was like during the candle lighing ceremony, along with the slide show. Thinking of you all I bet it was hard to go back but yet good to go back to the hospital where Haley was all the time and see the people who fought just as hard as you and Haley did for her life, there will always be a few doctors and nurses that mean the world to you that you will never forget. Here's an email I got that reminded me of you, brion's, and lambert's. I know it is long but just read all of it and imagine this being Haley. Oh how sweet it is.

Sally jumped up as soon as she saw the surgeon come out of the operating room. She said: "How is my little boy? Is he going to be all right? When can I see him?" The surgeon said, "I'm sorry. We did all we could, but your boy didn't make it." Sally said, "Why do little children get cancer? Doesn't God care any more? Where were you, God, when my son needed you?" The surgeon asked, "Would you like some time alone with your son? One of the nurses will be out in a few minutes, before he's transported to the university.” Sally asked the nurse to stay with her while she said good-bye to son. She ran her fingers lovingly through his thick red curly hair. Would you like a lock of his hair?" the nurse asked. Sally nodded yes. The nurse cut a lock of the boy's hair, put it in a plastic bag and handed it to Sally. The mother said, "It was Jimmy's idea to donate his body to the university for study. He said it might help somebody else. "I said no at first, but Jimmy said, 'Mom, I won't be using it after I die. Maybe it will help some other little boy spend one more day with his Mom." She went on, "My Jimmy had a heart of gold. Always thinking of someone else. Always wanting to help others if he could." Sally walked out of Children's mercy Hospital for the last time, after spending most of the last six months there.
She put the bag with Jimmy's belongings on the seat beside her in the car. The drive home was difficult. It was even harder to enter the empty house. She carried Jimmy's belongings, and the plastic bag with the lock of his hair to her son's room. She started placing the model cars and other personal things back in his room exactly where he had always kept them. She lay down across his bed and, hugging his pillow, cried herself to sleep.
It was around midnight when Sally awoke. Lying beside her on the bed was a folded letter. The letter said: "Dear Mom, I know you're going to miss me; but don't think that I will ever forget you, or stop loving you, just 'cause I'm not around to say I LOVE YOU. I will always love you, Mom, even more with each day. Someday we will see each other again. Until then, if you want to adopt a little boy so you won't be so lonely, that's okay with me. He can have my room and old stuff to play with. But, if you decide to get a girl instead, she probably wouldn't like the same things us boys do. You'll have to buy her dolls and stuff girls like, you know. Don't be sad thinking about me. This really is a neat place. Grandma and Grandpa met me as soon as I got here and showed me around some, but it will take a long time to see everything. The angels are so cool. I love to watch them fly. And, you know what? Jesus doesn't look like any of his pictures. Yet, when I saw Him, I knew it was Him. Jesus himself took me to see GOD! And guess what, Mom? I got to sit on God's knee and talk to Him, like I was somebody important. That's when I told Him that I wanted to write you a letter, to tell you good-bye and everything. But I already knew that wasn't allowed. Well, you know what Mom? God handed me some paper and His own personal pen to write you this letter. I think Gabriel is the name of the angel who is going to drop this letter off to you. God said for me to give you the answer to one of the questions you asked Him 'Where was He when I needed him?' "God said He was in the same place with me, as when His son Jesus was on the cross. He was right there, as He always is with all His children. Oh, by the way, Mom, no one else can see what I've written except you. To everyone else this is just a blank piece of paper. Isn't that cool? I have to give God His pen back now. He needs it to write some more names in the Book of Life. Tonight I get to sit at the table with Jesus for supper. I'm, sure the food will be great. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you. I don't hurt anymore. The cancer is all gone. I'm glad because I couldn't stand that pain anymore and God couldn't stand to see me hurt so much, either. That's when He sent The Angel of Mercy to come get me. The Angel said I was a Special Delivery! How about that?

Hi Mathis family, Wish we would've got a chance to talk to you more at Brooke's funeral service. There was a nice article in the Lincoln paper yesterday about Josh, ... also mentioned Haley and Brooke. We too are "sick" of cancer taking the lives of kids and with Molly's leukemia still in remission feel very fortunate, but will never, never take good health for granted, we still think of your family often and your sweet daughters!!
