William’s Story

Site created on August 22, 2018

Our son, William, has complex congenital heart disease (CHD).  He is scheduled to undergo a heart catheterization on Monday, August 27, and open-heart surgery on Thursday, August 30, at Boston Children's Hospital.  This is William's second open-heart surgery, his first open-heart surgery took place at 7-months-old.

William was diagnosed with CHD in-utero, at approximately 18 weeks gestation.  While the initial diagnosis was terrifying, caring for a child with special needs soon became our new normal, and since, our life has become a beautiful balance of caring for both of our children, William and Ali.  We have been beyond fortunate with William, as he has thrived over the past 4 years.  Now to be honest, this road is not easy...but it was born out of love, and we would travel it a million times over, because the pride, joy, and unconditional love that we feel for William cannot be measured...in so many ways he is your average (almost 4 year old)...He loves macaroni and cheese, riding his bike, snuggles, playing with his sister (and arguably his best-friend), spooky stories and yes...potty talk...

But in other ways...he is beyond extraordinary...and he is our warrior.

On August 30, William's surgical team will attempt a biventricular repair.  This procedure is complex and comes with a great deal of risk, however,  the biventricular repair has the best chance of creating the strongest heart for William, and could provide him with a better quality of life, long-term.

As we embark on this next chapter...we do so with mixed emotions...that of great fear....especially the fear of the unknown...But we also approach this next chapter with great strength and optimism.  The flag that you see in the above picture, is a prayer flag, and it was placed atop Mount Kilimanjaro this past July, by two of Chad's colleagues and friends.  This flag has special meaning to us...as it captures our William so beautifully and completely...he is a beacon of strength and determination; and his spirit is far reaching, touching each and every person who crosses his path.

We are truly grateful for the love and support that we have received from our family and our friends.  Thank you for traveling this journey alongside of us, and thank you for showering our sweet boy with your love.

Heart Hugs,
Jennifer & Chad

William David Poulliotte, age 4, died in his parents’ loving arms, at Levine Children’s Hospital, in Charlotte, NC, on Friday, December 7, 2018.

William was born on September 8, 2014, in Charlotte, NC, to proud parents Chad Poulliotte and Jennifer Poulliotte.

William’s smile was infectious, and he brought joy to each and every person who crossed his path.  He loved lining up his cars, constructing big buildings out of legos and magna tiles, riding his bike and scooter, playing on his swing set, going for carriage and wagon rides, snuggling with his family, reading books, playing on his iPad, listening to nursery rhymes, and dancing to his favorite song, “Sandstorm”.  He loved his family passionately, especially his big sister, Ali, they were and will always be, best friends.

William had congenital heart disease, but he fought to live each and every day, and he did so with joy and love.  He was a beacon of strength and determination; his spirit was far reaching; and his family is beyond grateful to have spent the past 4 years showering him with their unconditional love.  He is and will always be their hero…their heart warrior…their sunshine.

William is survived by his devoted parents Chad and Jennifer; his loving sister, Ali; his paternal grandmother, Carol Poulliotte; his maternal grandmother, Lizbeth Royle; aunts; uncles; cousins and friends.

A special thank you to his caregivers in the CVICU and Progressive Care Unit at Levine Children’s Hospital, as they worked tirelessly on his behalf, and treated him with the utmost care, dignity and respect.
