Wendy’s Story

Site created on May 12, 2018

In May, 2018 doctors found two gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) on my liver and started me on an oral medication called Gleevec, a targeted drug that will hopefully shrink the tumors enough for them to be surgically removed. When they first discovered them the tumors were at stage four and covered 75% of my liver. We're hoping and praying that in 12 months the tumors will shrink by half and I will only lose 25% of my liver. I am in good hands at the Winship Cancer Center in Atlanta and in good spirits, surrounded by a wonderful support system.

Journal entry by Wendy Hogg

I see it's been almost a year since I last posted and what a year it has been. I am sorry I haven't kept you all informed of my health but I think we've all had more important things to concentrate on and there's really been nothing to report. All the scans have shown no change in the tumors and my bloodwork is good.

Yesterday I had a Zoom call with my oncologist who delivered the sobering news that he believes it's just scar tissue and probably won't shrink, which means surgery is not possible. And without surgery they cannot take me off the chemo medication. My next step is to do a follow-up with MD Anderson mid-summer to get a second opinion, though I am not expecting them to say much different.

I do have some other sad news that most of you already know. John and I have parted ways. He has generously allowed me to say at The Abbey while my Tiny House arrives, which will eventually go onto a small investment property I have a few doors down. I don't want to go into details but the split, albeit heartbreaking, is so far amicable and I hope we will remain friends going forward.

Thank you all for your unwavering support and love. It means the world to me.
