Laurie’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep friends and family updated.

Hi Everyone!
As many of you already know, I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma last October.  I have been on mostly oral chemotherapy for the past 10months and this has been going well. Happily, I am currently in remission!
Multiple Myeloma almost always comes back, but in order to prolong my disease-free interval, I am having an autologous stem cell transplant (HSCT). This uses my own stem cells which were collected earlier this year (a very cool procedure I must say—-not a surprise to anyone that my
inner nerd just can’t help think that!). I’ll be admitted to the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital on October 8th to receive high dose chemotherapy to wipe out my bone marrow. The transplant will be a few days later and consists of getting my own stem cells back via an IV. The hospital stay is about two weeks with further recovery at home. Paul, Rachel, Sarah and I will post updates on this website.
I’d love to hear from you either here or by email or text—-it would definitely buoy my spirits.
Thinking of you all,
Love, Laurie

Newest Update

Journal entry by Paul Konowitz

Hi all. We came down to Cutchogue this weekend for a much needed change of scenery, to walk along the beach, and to reconnect with friends.

When we arrived at Mike Malter’s house (neighbor and my friend from 7th grade) we were met by Mike who uncharacteristically was wearing a wool hat in his house. Soon after he and Frankie hugged us he revealed his very personal tribute to Laurie - as you can see, shaving his head!  We were teary eyed at this incredible moment of friendship and love. It is a moment - and an ultimate act of friendship - that we will never forget. We love you Mike!

Laurie continues to improve on a daily basis. Still not close to 100% but baby steps each day. She does receive compliments on the shape of her bald head. It is rather round and nicely shaped - who knew?  It was a chance I took over 35 years ago!!

Look for for continuing updates. Thank you all for continuously being there. Much love to all.
