Newest Update

Journal entry by Tammy Larson Thibodeau

It's been a hot minute since I put an update on here but I figured I'd do it this way because I think less people read these entries than fb posts and for me, it's about keeping those of you who are seriously interested, up-to-date on my health journey, and not so much about keeping the looky lou's in the know. 😉
I believe I did make a post about having to go into my doctor here in Pierre, a couple days after arriving home from surgery. I think I mentioned the strong antibiotic, the side effects, and not being able to finish the full course.
Well things have been progressively been getting worse since then, but I'm not anything, if not stubborn, so I've been suffering it out, mostly in silence, although I do recall telling my daughter, a couple times, "something just isn't right".
I had a few appointments in Sioux Falls this past Monday and I happened to bring my current troubles up to one of my docs (who isn't a GI and really didn't hafta get involved) and he decided to investigate a bit further by ordering a couple tests, one of which was a CT scan, to be done in Pierre the following week.
I decided since I had the scan, I may as well get a hold of my family doctor, fill him in on the situation, and try to see him the same day, after the scan, to go over the results. He thought that was a good idea and even ordered some labs to be done as well.
Well, like I had told my daughter, "something just isn't right".... And my gut was right on.
Now remember people, my body, for whatever reason, doesn't believe in doing things the easy way, it likes to take the road less traveled and comes up with some, supposedly, rare shit! Lol.... Anyway, the CT scan showed that I had a blood clot by my liver, called a portal vein thrombosis. I'm not going to bore you with all the medically technical details (honestly, I just don't know them!), if you're interested in knowing more, Google will help you out! My blood tests show that my liver enzymes are a little outta whack, so my liver is struggling a bit at the moment, I guess.
I spent one night in the hospital while the started me on blood thinners. They just wanted to keep a close eye on me beings GI  bleeding has been an issue in the past, I'm already a bit on the anemic side, and now they hafta throw blood thinners at me.
I guess I will need to be on these blood thinners for the next 6 months at least, all of which I will closely monitored. I was told this is a significant size clot (maybe cuz I'm stubborn?) and will take a while for the body to reabsorb, but until then, the body adapts by building new little veins around the clot, and with the help of the blood thinner, that should happen faster (if i understood it all correctly), so the liver can get the blood it needs to do its job properly. Pretty cool huh? Our bodies are quite amazing! But the liver being unhappy and inflamed is supposedly what is causing all my "lovely" right side belly and back pain.
I guess this too shall pass! I am looking forward to the day when I get to feel "good" again, but getting more and more doubtful of that day ever coming. Catching a break does not seem to be in the cards for this lady!
I will try to keep y'all posted on any new developments, good or bad, but don't count on it. Lol....
Thank y'all for caring enough to read this and please take care of yourselves during these uncertain times!
