“Approximately 10% of Di/Di twins will be monozygotic, resulting from the early splitting (within the first 3 days) of a single embryo. Both fetuses will have arisen from the same egg and sperm, and therefore, will be genetically identical.” So Coby & Bennett's embryo split in half BEFORE implantation. Upon implantation, they each developed their own sacs, placentas, etc. How cool is that?!
To tell them apart, we have tried nail polish on one toe, sharpie in various places, name bands on everyone when we go out, but we have settled on a small gold bracelet from my Grandma on Coby‘s right wrist. (Why Coby? … well, in my mind, Coby is the baby-baby, even though technically Dane was born last. Coby is the one we were a bit worried about during pregnancy and he was the smallest. So I thought he should get the bracelet. Later on Dad pointed out that “B” for Bracelet on Bennett would have made a lot more sense; he’s right, but it would be confusing to make that change now.)
They do have differences… mostly their expressions. But at first glance, it is challenging to know who is who. Bennett’s hair is longer and curlier, he is a little bit heavier and has a deeper gaze. Coby had an adorable laugh that he communicates with often. He and Adam are buddies. It’s adorable. He does a cute little pout with his upper lip and flirts with his eyes (like Adam, except Coby’s little blinks are shorter). They are both super affectionate and easy going/more mellow that Adam & Dane.
