Gaby & Patrick’s QUADRUPLETS ’s Story

Site created on May 11, 2022

…ultrasound tech asked, “So, did you know you were having quadruplets?” No, no we did not. No idea! Needless to say, we were completely shocked, astounded, and excited to find this out. We have been scrambling ever since to make the adjustments need to go from a family of five to a party of nine, overnight…

My family and I are speechless with gratitude for all of the love and encouragement we are receiving through your well wishes and prayers. I apologize for not being better about replying to calls, messages and questions. I listen, read, process and appreciate them all; I am just more exhausted than I anticipated and keep dropping the ball when it comes to replying on via multiple platforms 🫣. Now that we are in the final stretch, I am journaling updates & thoughts/concerns about preparing for the arrival of Adam, Bennett, Coby and Dane in this CaringBridge page.
Many people have graciously asked how to help (thank you! 💙) and I think it’s time to accept that I probably won’t have a perfect answer for this, because, honestly, a lot of help is needed. Everything I can think of so far, I will share in CaringBridge. I just thank you in advance for your patience, as we all navigate the unchartered territory of this super unique blessing!

Journal entry by Gaby Hagler

“Approximately 10% of Di/Di twins will be monozygotic, resulting from the early splitting (within the first 3 days) of a single embryo. Both fetuses will have arisen from the same egg and sperm, and therefore, will be genetically identical.”
So Coby & Bennett's embryo split in half BEFORE implantation. Upon implantation, they each developed their own sacs, placentas, etc. How cool is that?!
To tell them apart, we have tried nail polish on one toe, sharpie in various places, name bands on everyone when we go out, but we have settled on a small gold bracelet from my Grandma on Coby‘s right wrist. (Why Coby? … well, in my mind, Coby is the baby-baby, even though technically Dane was born last. Coby is the one we were a bit worried about during pregnancy and he was the smallest. So I thought he should get the bracelet. Later on Dad pointed out that “B” for Bracelet on Bennett would have made a lot more sense; he’s right, but it would be confusing to make that change now.)
They do have differences… mostly their expressions. But at first glance, it is challenging to know who is who. Bennett’s hair is longer and curlier, he is a little bit heavier and has a deeper gaze. Coby had an adorable laugh that he communicates with often. He and Adam are buddies. It’s adorable. He does a cute little pout with his upper lip and flirts with his eyes (like Adam, except Coby’s little blinks are shorter). They are both super affectionate and easy going/more mellow that Adam & Dane.
I am very grateful for this fascinating journey.
