Sterling’s Story

Site created on December 11, 2023

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

In late September 2023 Sterling contracted Covid. After a couple of weeks he remained ill with increased nausea, fatigue, and eventually developed tremors. After a month Sterling was officially diagnosed with long Covid.

Sterling is continuing treatment from his neurologist, traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, and Covid care specialists. Sterling’s tremors are uncommon and none of his doctors have seen patients with tremors caused by Covid.

Sterling’s tremors and fatigue made it unsafe to do his normal work, sharpening knives and taking care of the knife shop. At the end of October he stepped down from his job that he loved.

Most days Sterling spends his time resting and trying to fully recover. He can do daily physical tasks like making meals and taking care of himself if he paces his energy by resting every 5-10 minutes throughout a task. His full body tremors come and go throughout the day and make it difficult to walk and do fine movements. The tremors leave him feeling exhausted with very sore muscles. When working through mentally demanding tasks Sterling will often stutter or struggle forming words. This has made it challenging to find any work from home and isn’t eligible for unemployment. He is currently seeking disability, but is waiting to see if a lawyer will pick up his case.

Thank you for your love and support through this difficult time.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Emily Marks

This past week we got a notice denying Sterling from getting disability. It was frustrating but somewhat expected. Our lawyers office said it was pretty typical. The good news is they are assigning a new person to work more closely on Sterling’s case and take it to court.  The bad news is it will be another 6-8 months until we get results.

Sterling did one other acupuncture treatment and decided it wasn’t right for him at this time. His practitioner gave him some other resources to look into including a Tai Ji Quan class that he signed up for to get some more gentle exercises in his day. The other recommendation was reflex integration for stress resilience. Sterling started this last week, he said it was a very relaxing treatment. The next couple of days were a bit of a roller coaster of emotional release and his body processing stress that was built up, all normal things expected coming out for the treatment. He’s going to try a couple more sessions and see if it helps.

One win this week is that we got Sterling approved for handicap parking! It’ll be much easier for him to get out of the house when he wants to walk around a little.

For those not in Minnesota, it finally feels like winter around here and we got a good amount of very heavy snowfall. Luckily I was able to work from home and take care of the snow at my own pace. Sterling and I usually tag team the snow blowing and shoveling, and even so the a small driveway it’s a lot. I’m very thankful for the precipitation, and also very grateful that we have had a fairly dry winter.

In other news we started seedlings for our garden and also got some cattle panels delivered by a friend. We hope to make some trellises for the garden that our squash, beans, melons, and cucumbers can climb up. We did get a few volunteers for gardening and I’m working out some projects/waiting for warmer weather before setting a few dates.

We might do some sort of fundraiser event/ bake sale situation to raise more funds since it looks like it will be a while until Sterling is eligible for disability benefits. Thankfully we are not in any rush, our deferral got approved for our mortgage forbearance and it lets us stretch the funds already raised.

We really appreciate each and everyone who has helped us the last few months. The check-ins, meal drops, help getting to appointments, etc. have all been crucial to our wellbeing. I have also joined a caretaker support group through work and have been able to connect with some lovely ladies that are going through similar challenges. Thank you everyone for your love and support!
