Stacie’s Story

Site created on February 20, 2018

It all began with surgery in October of 2016 to remove what was thought to be fibroids in the uterus, The biopsy revealed high grade stage 3c endometrial stromal sarcoma. I then had another surgery to remove all additional areas in the pelvic region that might be at risk. When I had healed sufficiently from the two surgeries, I began 6 rounds of some pretty harsh chemo treatments (during which time I had two separate hospital stays for cellulitis.) Three months later, a scan revealed a tumor in an abdominal lymph node.  After surgical removal, targeted radiation of the lymph nodes in the abdominal region began.

The day after radiation was completed, a painful bump in the abdominal area and a trip to the emergency room for another scan showed that the cancer had spread to my liver, lungs and surrounded my kidney and bladder. The tumors were inoperable. My oncologist said that time was of the essence and wated me to have a different and even stronger regimen of chemo indefinitely. The hope is to shrink the tumors or at the very least stop them from getting bigger. Although my prognosis is poor, I am not giving up. I still have a lot of fight left in me and am trying to stay positive. In the meantime I am going to get busy living and enjoying every moment I have left.

Having the support of family and friends helps a great deal. Thank you to everyone and, I will continue to give updates when I can.

Journal entry by Lori Schulman

Stacie is settled in at home.  We have been very busy organizing all the services that are available through the hospice team.  Stacie had a catheter put in, so the fluid in her abdominal cavity can now be drained at home. With a bit of adjustment on her pain medication, we feel we are zeroing in on the right combination and dosage to both alleviate her pain and enable lucid waking hours.

Today is Thanksgiving, and we are so very thankful for all the love and support surrounding us and that Stacie will be able to join us for dinner with family and extended family.

Her strength continues to be an inspiration.
