Sharla’s Story

Site created on November 6, 2015

Sharla had her mammogram at the end of June and all was fine. Roll forward to the first week of October and Sharla noticed a lump in her right breast, which she attributed to bumping into a corner of a dresser during Carol's move to Arkansas. BTW, Carol now lives in Arkansas... When the lump did not go away she went to the doctor for a series of tests and we now know that she has a rather aggressive form of cancer. She starts her chemotherapy this coming Tuesday, November 10th of 2015, and must continue with it for an extended period of time. The prognosis is good [since she caught it early ] (maybe not so early - see additional posts) and she met with her specialized care team so she now knows the planned course of action.  (That was Ken, this is Sharla) The team has moved fast and we are on our way to stopping this cancer in its tracks - but to my daughters, who inherited my dense breasts, and others who are told you have dense breasts - talk to your doctor about getting an ultrasound mammogram or at the minimum a 3-D mammogram.  Unfortunately the regular mammograms did not catch this for me.  My oncologist suggests the ultrasound mammogram and if your doctor orders it, your insurance should cover it.  Well, now we know - and I can deal with what I know. NOTE: Kaycie has set up a "Go Fund Me" account for Sharla. Details can be found HERE (http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/sharlariead/journal/view/id/5643d293ca16b4eb6974180f).

Newest Update

Journal entry by Sharla Riead

I had my 6 month CT Scan on Monday and my Oncologist appointment on Friday.  I was expecting a quick, normal 20 minutes at the doctor, but walked out 5 hours later!  The good news is I walked out with nothing but good, positive news.

My CT Scan was clear - they did not see anything at all worrisome.   But, I had a new lump in my right breast, so the oncologist called and scheduled me for an ultrasound immediately.  There it was, another hot dog in my right chest area this time.  They took a  lot of photos and measurements and the doctor examining the results said he also wanted a mammogram to verify what he was seeing.  I have no breast tissue, so I haven't had a mammogram for four years.  However, since I have very little feeling there, it was not so bad and they could get everything positioned exactly as needed to see what they wanted to see.

Turns out, this is just another calcified fat necrosis and nothing harmful.   I truly am Ms. Gotrocks, I have photographic evidence.  Their concern is that these normally appear just following surgery and not years later, but my body is different, apparently.  It does feel good that they did all this scanning and couldn't find anything that I need to worry about.

I thought this would be my last oncologist visit.  Not so fast...she says that since I had such an aggressive form of cancer, and it moved so rapidly, and my body is on some other time table, that she wants to continue to scan me.  So, I have my next check up in three months, another CT scan and meeting with her in 6 months,  then I will have check ups every 6 months and CT scans every year for the foreseeable future.  That's OK with me as well.  I'll have a yearly scan to make sure everything is still clear and that way I have no worries!
