Sandy’s Story

Site created on December 9, 2021

Wife. Mom. Mother-in-law. Grandma. Sister. Aunt. Niece. Cousin. Co-worker. Friend. Friend of a Friend.

No matter how you know Sandy you know that she fulfills all of these roles with her whole heart. She is the most positive, fun, and loving person many of us know. She constantly puts others before herself, but now she needs your prayers.

Some of you may not know this, but back in May of 2012 she was diagnosed with stage 3 Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. She underwent IV chemotherapy treatments ~every 2 months that year and was in remission by the end of the year. Her doctors were amazed at how her body reacted to the treatments. Since then she has continued with routine monitoring at the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic and was doing great!

Fast forward to spring of 2020. Sandy began noticing similar symptoms to 2012 (swollen lymph nodes in her neck, fatigue and some shortness of breath). Shortly after this, labs were run and they were quite critical. They sent her to St Luke’s Medical Center that same day. Due to COVID policies at the time, Scott had to drop her off at the lobby and was not allowed in. She remained hospitalized for over a week receiving various chemo treatments, blood transfusions, etc. Luckily, some family and family friends worked there and were able to visit intermittently.

Following her hospital stay, a new regimen of chemo treatments began that consisted of multiple oral medications and IV chemo treatments every 8 weeks at the Lombardi Cancer Clinic. She had to make many changes during this time including stopping work (per the strong recommendation from many doctors to reduce her risk of infection), being careful of spending time with others, and less time outdoors doing the things she enjoys. Meaning- less time with family and friends, not being able to see her clients and coworkers, not being able to be in crowds to shop or attend sporting events, not gardening, and not being able to hold her granddaughter at times. It was a long 2 years of treatment.

But, during this time she was still also able to enjoy fun family events in a modified way. In fact, many people had no idea she was still going through cancer treatments. Sandy’s positive attitude, selflessness, and fun loving personality made people forget she was sick and undergoing such intense treatments.

In the last couple of months, it was discovered that the maintenance chemotherapy she was receiving was no longer working. Thus, more tests, labs, scans and procedures were needed to decide on the next course of action. Much time spent at Lombardi Cancer Clinic, St Luke’s, and now Froedtert Hospital.

Sandy has begun the process of an auto bone marrow transplant (transplant of her own stem cells). She has spent the last few weeks going to Milwaukee for additional tests, labs, procedures, and scans. This is the beginning of her bone marrow transplant journey and time for us to share her story with you all.

Sandy and her family have been privately dealing with cancer for years now. They have appreciated your prayers then and need them now more than ever. We are using this CaringBridge website to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Ashley Rickaway

Quick update:

As many of you already heard, our family trip to Florida back in August went a lil bit differently than planned. Sandy had to be admitted to hospital for almost 4 days for a severe pneumonia. -Side note: If you ever want to know about our Florida Hospital healthcare experience we would have numerous unfortunate stories to share with you. Long story short, be thankful for the healthcare systems we have so close to home.- Sandy’s positive attitude and love for activity yet again didn’t stop her and the rest of us from enjoying Disney World (even if it did involve being pushed around in a wheelchair)! It was truly magical and watching Sandy and Scott’s faces light up with Brinley experiencing all of the magic that Disney brings was something we will never forget.

Luckily, antibiotics and some injections did wonders for Sandy and within a few weeks she was feeling back to normal. This past week, Sandy had a normal scheduled follow up appointment with her oncologist. It was noted that on a scan from Florida a nodule was found near her thyroid. Her lab values were also quite low. Her oncologist ordered an ultrasound of thyroid area and a full body PET scan, moved up from December to now. She has also been sick for last week or so with cold/flu like symptoms.

Obviously, we were all very anxious and nervous waiting for the test results based on how sick she has been feeling lately. Thankfully, God has blessed us again with negative PET scan and thyroid nodules that her oncologist believes are benign. They will continue to monitor these as needed going forward. At this time, her immunoglobulin levels remain very low! The doctors and nurses can’t believe she is still doing as much as she is. Likely why now, she is having another respiratory sickness-potential pneumonia. They have started her on antibiotics and are also awaiting insurance authorization to start an important IV infusion (likely weekly infusions) to assist with boosting her immune system and overall lab values. We are patiently awaiting insurance to approve this medication (doctor says it is an expensive drug). Hopefully they will approve it by tomorrow!

Thus, good news about scans! No cancer! Prayers are appreciated for Sandy to kick this latest sickness and help her to feel better, like she was before all of this! We appreciate people checking in often to see how we are all doing. We wish you all the best health of your own! Thanks again for everything!

P.S. sandy is quite tired this week so if she does not return phone call or txts this is why. Prayers please to get her feeling better!
