THIS IS STEVE, SAM'S DAD.
Starting a few weeks ago, Sam began experiencing what looks like, so far, minor yet
chronic graft-versus disease (GVHD): in his eyes (dry), mouth (little sores), and liver (high liver enzyme in the blood). His doctor put him back on a low level of immunosuppressants. Sam since reports that his symptoms seem to be much better. To me, Sam seems to be his normal self.
Some GVHD was not unexpected, no matter how closely matched Sam's donor was. In truth, he may always deal with GVHD on some level or another.
Sam returned home yesterday for a week for spring break, the first time he has been home for 4 months. Seeing her great bud again, our corgi Maddie went utterly ballistic, all over him, and then wore herself out doing zoomies, and then repeated the whole thing twice - easily a 20-minute re-uniting. Currently, where Sam goes, Maddie goes.
