Sam’s Story

Site created on May 7, 2021

I was half through my first semester of Bible college when I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in November 2016. After 3.5 years, I finished my chemo regimen on a happy day in May 2020. However, my leukemia recurred in my right optic nerve and I was officially diagnosed with recurrent ALL in December 2020. I afterward went through 14 rounds of brain radiation in January and started an immunotherapy called Blinatumomab in the middle of January. I did three 21 day cycles and finished those in May 2021. I had no adverse side effects from the immunotherapy aside from an occasional headache--to God be the glory, not all are so fortunate.  I then underwent total body irradiation and super-chemo starting May 24th in preparation for a bone marrow/stem cell transplant, which I received on May 28th. Keep me in your thoughts and prayers and check my site for frequent updates from either myself or my dad or mom.

Journal entry by Sam Ewen

THIS IS STEVE, SAM'S DAD.

Starting a few weeks ago, Sam began experiencing what looks like, so far, minor yet chronic graft-versus disease (GVHD): in his eyes (dry), mouth (little sores), and liver (high liver enzyme in the blood). His doctor put him back on a low level of immunosuppressants. Sam since reports that his symptoms seem to be much better. To me, Sam seems to be his normal self.

Some GVHD was not unexpected, no matter how closely matched Sam's donor was. In truth, he may always deal with GVHD on some level or another.

Sam returned home yesterday for a week for spring break, the first time he has been home for 4 months. Seeing her great bud again, our corgi Maddie went utterly ballistic, all over him, and then wore herself out doing zoomies, and then repeated the whole thing twice - easily a 20-minute re-uniting. Currently, where Sam goes, Maddie goes.
