Sally’s Story

Site created on January 2, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website.
I’m very sorry if you are just seeing this now; I wanted to share this with you myself.
I have been diagnosed with colon cancer, and will be out of commission for at least the next few weeks. I had surgery on January 2nd I , and have few days in the hospital (UVM Medical Center). I anticipate two weeks off following the surgery, with a hopeful return to work at least part-time in mid- January. I will be starting chemo a few weeks after that, and am not sure what that will mean — TBD.

I feel optimistic about my health projection, fortunate to have such excellent health care, and blessed to have such wonderful support from family, friends and colleagues.Joe is the best caregiver, spouse and love anyone could hope for. And I’m so fortunate to have been able to spend some wonderful time  with both kids, who I love with all my heart, over the holidays.

We are using this site to keep family and friends updated in one place. I have been letting family, friends, and colleagues know this over the past few days and want to be open about this, so please feel free to share this with others!
We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Journal entry by Sally Borden-Arioli

Last chemo of the year ☑️
Almost exactly four years ago my life - and my family’s - was upended by my diagnosis of metastatic colon cancer.
I had my scheduled colonoscopy and fully expected the Dr. to say it was normal, or more likely they’d found and removed a few polyps, and continue on a frequent schedule.  Nope, fast tracked to a scan, then surgery January 2nd, started chemo a few weeks later. Then so fortunate to have a consult and then undergo cutting-edge  radiation at UCLA later that year. Eventually had to restart chemo, on my third regimen now. So very grateful for the smart people who research and figure out new drugs that work so when one chemical cocktail stops working there are alternatives. At least for now.
Anyway, many many wonderful things have happened in these four years. Cancer is now a part of my life but not everything. I’m so grateful for my family, for my husband who makes me popcorn on chemo days when I don’t feel like eating anything else, for the kind nurses and staff at the UVMMC oncology infusion center where I get to spend many hours every three weeks, for the many many wonderful people I’m so fortunate to have in my life (that means YOU!), for having been able to continue to work at a job I love.
Which brings me to one more thing: as many of you know, I’m stepping down from my job at the end of this month. I have mixed feelings, but in my heart I know it’s the right thing for me as for the organization. Kidsafe Collaborative will continue to thrive, and I know I’m leaving it in good hands.

Wishing you all and happy holidays in whatever ways you may celebrate, 🕎🎄❤️
