Robert’s Story

Site created on March 11, 2018

This is crazy. My dad is a super active, strong, healthy eater, non-smoker, non-drinker type of guy. He woke my mom up last night (3/10) about 1:30 am saying, “something didn’t feel right” and he was having difficulty breathing. Then his legs started getting all jiggle-ly and his chest started to hurt. So they went to Harvard Hospital ER. After a chest x-ray and an MRI they realized it was probably an aortic tear. They knew he would need to go to a different hospital for surgery. So he was flown by helicopter to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee. Immediately, he went into open heart surgery (Surgery started at 11am on Sat 3/10, ended at 9:30p) The surgery lasted for 10.5 hours and he needed 13 units of blood. It was a very complicated surgery, the surgeon said that after they solved an issue another would pop up. His heart was not pumping like it should so after the surgery they left his chest “open “ and kept him on a heart/lung bypass machine. His heart still isn’t pumping much on its own. And there is still bleeding from the aorta. He is in the Cardiac ICU and it is touch and go. They really need the bleeding to stop or they will have to go back in and fix any additional tears/leaks.
