Rhonda’s Story

Site created on December 17, 2020

Welcome to Rhonda's CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support, prayers, and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Rhonda's story began about this time last year when her back pain started to become intolerable. A surgery in 2017 fixed the ruptured disk, but the lack of the disk resulted in severe back pain. Fortunately, the great folks at West Valley Medical Center were able to fuse the L5-S1 in August (after 5 months of elective surgery delays). We are happy to report that her back surgery has been successful and feels as good as new!

Unfortunately, Rhonda's mother, Colleen Weakland, passed away on September 2, 2020. Rhonda was able to attend the funeral in Riverton, Wyoming and be with family during that terribly sad time.

After an annual mammogram in early October, a "spot" was detected on Rhonda's breast. A biopsy revealed the unexpected, breast cancer. We are so fortunate that Rhonda had an annual mammogram and not an every other year mammogram. The cancer was detected early, which is great! However, the type of cancer is the aggressive variety. After a plethora of additional tests and scans, the tumors were surgically removed along with two nearby sentinel lymph nodes. Unfortunately, one of the lymph nodes had a small amount of cancer. Because the cancer was detected in the lymph node, additional testing was required to eliminate other areas that might be cancerous. Unfortunately once again, cancer was detected in her L1 vertebra. Because of the cancer in the lymph node, L1 vertebra, and the type of cancer, Rhonda was advised to undergo the "heavy duty" chemo treatment plan including 4 infusions of "AC" chemo every other week; 12 infusions of "T" chemo for 12 weeks; 30 rounds of radiation; and finally 5-10 years of hormone inhibitors.

The series of unfortunate events in Rhonda’s life over the last year has been unimaginable. Throughout all of this, she has remained “Wyoming Strong” and resilient when facing a mountain of adversity. We wanted to share her story here and keep you updated as she begins her breast cancer treatments. Again, we appreciate all of your support, prayers, and thoughtful words of encouragement; keep them coming!!!

Update #14:

Been a long time friends and family, but happy to report nothing but good news. In fact, Rhonda received the best news to date, no cancer detected after her MRI last week. The MRI was intended to guide the last radiation treatment on her vertebrae, but the radiologist could not locate any cancer to treat. Excellent news! Even though no cancer was detected, they are still planning to radiate the vertebrae. Rhonda will have her 34th and final radiation treatment sometime soon (next week or soon thereafter). Rhonda has an appointment with her oncologist next week (Aug 3) and will begin taking a hormone blocker (pills), which will effectively prevent or block the hormones that likely caused the cancer from the beginning. The hormone pills will be a daily reminder of what she went through and will last the next five years, but again, this will prevent the cancer from returning. The last remaining task will be removing her port (used during chemo). I suspect the port removal topic will come up next week at her appointment with her oncologist.

Rhonda is finally singing that ole Cowsills tune (click here) and super pumped that all of her hair is arriving as it was. She currently has a hairdo that looks more Portland than Boise, and she thinks it resembles a Sleestak style (Coda and I think it looks cute J). I suggested dying her hair bronco blue with a touch of orange, but the idea was quickly rejected for good reason. Eyelashes? Yes! Eyebrows? Yes! Again, nothing but good news here!

Over the last month, we have had a number of visitors and Rhonda certainly appreciated the company. Thanks to everyone that stayed with us or stopped to visit. It was certainly nice to catch up and visit with you. As always, we thank you for your continued thoughts, prayers, and love! It has certainly been a crazy (almost) year full of unexpected and unfortunate events. These events certainly have a way of helping prioritize what is and what is not important in your life. We appreciate, now more than ever, what is truly important in life and a large part of that is each of you. Thank you so much for all of your support. I will check back again, after her last few appointments, and then we expect radio silence for at least the next five years!
