Rebekah’s Story

Site created on August 23, 2023

Dear Friends and Family,

We want to extend a warm welcome to you all as we embark on this journey together to support and uplift our beloved Rebekah. This (fully funded) Caring Bridge page has been created to keep everyone informed about her progress, offer updates on her treatment, and provide a platform where we can send our love, prayers, and well wishes.

Above all else, we want to thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts for all the amazing support people have provided through prayer, gifts, meals, cards, and so much more. The outpouring has been amazingly humbling and uplifting. God bless each and every one of you. Many people have contributed in so many different ways; some family, some are long-lost friends, and some are people we have never even had the pleasure of meeting. We can’t thank you enough.

As many of you know, Rebekah is a remarkable 44-year-old dental hygienist who has touched the lives of countless individuals with her caring nature and radiant smile. She has been a pillar of strength for her family, friends, and colleagues. Rebekah is a devoted mother to her two wonderful children, who mean the world to her. Recent times have presented us with unexpected challenges, as Rebekah has been diagnosed with primary myelofibrosis. This diagnosis has led us down a new path, one that is filled with medical procedures and treatments.

Currently, she has been admitted to the hospital to commence chemotherapy and radiation, all in preparation for an allogeneic stem cell transplant – a crucial step towards her healing. We invite you all to join us on this journey of hope, resilience, and healing. We understand the power of your prayers, your words of encouragement, and your unwavering presence.

Here on this Caring Bridge page, we will provide regular updates on Rebekah's condition, her treatment progress, and the milestones she achieves along the way. We encourage you to leave messages of love, prayers, and positive thoughts in the guestbook section. Your words will undoubtedly bring comfort to Rebekah during the moments when she needs it most.

Additionally, please feel free to share your stories, anecdotes, and memories – they all contribute to creating a virtual network of love that will envelop her. Thank you for being a part of Rebekah's journey to healing and restoration. Your presence here means the world to us, and we are incredibly grateful for the bonds of love that unite us all. With heartfelt gratitude,

Erik P. Southard

*Please note that Caring Bridge will likely prompt you to give funds to cover Rebekah's page or a page for others who are on a similar journey. Funds have been donated to cover Rebekah's page. Giving is never an expectation. We are so thankful to anyone who has given to any cause or person in need no matter how much or the type of gift/gesture.  Donations to Caring Bridge do not support Rebekah but do support the important work of this  great non-profit.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Erik Southard

Just reaching out to provide an update on Rebekah's progress. Her graft-vs-host disease seems to be starting to turn the corner and her liver enzymes are coming down. The most stubborn enzyme, bilirubin, is finally starting to inch down and went from 2.5 to 2.4 yesterday. Normal limit is below 1.0 so hopefully this will continue to go down. This was the first time her Bilirubin had shown any signs of improvement. They weaned her steroid dose yesterday by 10mg so she is now down to 50mg per day. She will continue with two visits each week for the foreseeable future for monitoring. She has two more IV infusions (Zemaira) to receive. The hope is that they can continue to work her off of steroids over time.

We thank you for your continued prayers and well wishes and feel blessed that we are on the other side of the transplant. We pray that her progress will continue. With spring here, Rebekah has been able to cautiously attend outdoor events to watch her children engage in sport (track and soccer). This has done her heart good; not being able to see our kids play has been so very hard on her. She had not been to a sporting event since last August.

We continue to say prayers of thanksgiving for all of those who continue to pray for us and help us in so many different ways. This journey continues and we are steadfast in seeing her restored to full health. Prayers continue for all those who are sick and suffering.

Including a picture of our children Breanna (12) and Liam (10). Life does not stop and we are so thankful for their strength and resilience. We pray they will be continually blessed with his grace, protection, and strength.

We Adore You, O Christ, We Thank You, We Praise You, and We Bless You, Because by Your Cross You Have Redeemed the World
