Quiana’s Story

Site created on January 12, 2019

Quiana was diagnosed with metastatic Ewing's Sarcoma in January 2019. There was a tumor in her pelvis and the disease had spread to her bone marrow.  She endured many chemotherapy and radiation treatments which included long trips and stays at Doernbecher Childrens Hospital in Portland, OR. The end of that year we were relieved to find out that she had responded well to treatment and that she was cancer free. For the last two years she has been busy enjoying life as a teenager - showing pigs, playing basketball, going to school and hanging out with her friends.

Unfortunately, in January 2022 we found out the original tumor was growing again. Her cancer is back and treatment options are limited. Chemotherapy can be given to slow down the disease but the tumor remains inoperable.

The chemotherapy Quiana has been prescribed is an oral chemo that she takes for 5 days, every 21 days. We are happy that she can take this at home and not have to be admitted to the hospital. They plan to give her 6 rounds of this chemotherapy and then will reassess treatment options at that time.

However, just "buying time" isn't something we are comfortable with settling for.  After lots of research we decided on seeking alternative treatment with Sunridge Medical Center is Scottsdale, AZ. Treatment includes IV vitamin infusions to improve her overall health, infusions to help fight cancer and oxygen therapy. Quiana visits AZ once a month for a week and takes oral supplements between trips.

We are optimistic about these treatments and she has already seen improvement in her overall health. Some of the side affects she has lived with since her original treatment have improved and she was able to tolerate her last round of chemo much better than the previous two rounds she had before we started the AZ treatments.

Quiana is actually doing great! The growth was caught on her routine scans and she is having no pain or symptoms of disease at this time. She continues to push through and has a busy spring and summer planned.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Ellen Cundall

I never updated everyone on what we decided to do for a treatment plan this summer. We opted out of chemo. A decision that seemed reckless at times but a decision that also allowed Quiana to feel great all summer. We continued her Arizona treatments and have looked into some additional alternative treatment options.

The scary part of this decision was wondering if her cancer would progress without chemo. MRIs were completed on Tuesday, and we found out yesterday that her cancer remains stable. No progression. The oncologist feels that continuing on our path of no chemo is logical at this point. A true relief for all of us! Quiana is set to scan again in 2 months as her disease must be closely monitored.

Quiana's senior year begins next week, and we feel so lucky to be at this point.

County Fair is also next week.

Football Season has begun for the boys.

Life is busy and we are soaking in every day.

Thankful for this win in her fight!
