Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support, prayers and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting!

Our family is asking for major prayers right now.  My dad had a stroke Sunday, October 28th. The initial effects of the stroke were less worrisome. However, early Wednesday morning, a blood clot in his brain caused loss of blood flow to his brain stem and he was put on life support in the ICU. After a few days in the ICU and multiple tests and scans, dad’s doctors at Maui Memorial Hospital knew that dad would be better monitored by specialists on Oahu, so he was transferred to Queens Medical Center. My mom, sisters and I flew out and are all with him.  Dad’s neurosurgeon determined that the swelling in dads brain was critical and he needed a right suboccipital craniectomy to remove part of the damaged brain and some of his skull to relieve pressure from his brain stem. The surgery went well. We are still waiting for swelling to go down and they are monitoring his progress.  Our prayer is that the effects of dad’s stroke stop in the name of Jesus and that he will recover from all of this with the power of Christ's mighty hand.

We still ask and appreciate that you continue to share dad’s progress with your praying friends by text, email or word of mouth and not post to social media.

I have posted all of the texts that I have been sharing with our family and friends. I will continue to post updates here, so all of our amazing prayer warriors can stay up to date on dad’s progress and need of prayer. We serve an amazing God who can do ALL things, who is shocking all the doctors that see dad’s progress. He is almighty and always so so good!!! Thank you for your prayers! We love you all!!!

Journal entry by Andrea Kaio

Kaala and I have been back on Maui for two weeks. We celebrated Easter with our Emmanuel Lutheran 'ohana, and on the following Sunday, sat with Hokuao, our worship team. This morning, we went to Emmanuel school to watch the May Day program. It was the first time either of us visited the campus during a school day. I visited my kindergarten kids in their classroom as they were getting ready for the program. Kaala also had many students and parents welcome him back. The program was beautiful, the weather was great, and it all made for a really nice morning.

We have begun to receive therapy at home through Hale Makua home health care. It's not nearly as much therapy as we were getting on Oahu, so we are now doing much of the work ourselves. Our brother-in-law, Mark Bowditch arrived this week, and is already motivating Kaala to continue to work hard. Our days have been busy with therapy, doctor appointments and getting settled in our little studio. I am not planning to keep up with this journal now that we are home, but please don't hesitate to call, text or email if you want to visit or stay in touch with us. We are so thankful to all of you for your continued prayers and support.

With the awesome love of Jesus,

Andrea and Kaala
