Pete’s Story

Site created on March 5, 2019

On Sunday, February 10th my dad, Pete Bieri, felt off balance and short of breath. After being taken to the ER at Regions in St. Paul, a variety of tests including an MRI and CAT scanned revealed a cancerous tumor on the left side of his brain. Valentines Day was spent having a two hour functional MRI of his brain to best prepare for a biopsy to best understand the type and severity of the tumor.  On Feb 15th the well accredited Dr. Alejandro Mendez performed a biopsy - an invasive surgery to test the tumor that was completed incredibly close to his speech and right motor strip. While waiting for the biopsy results, the recovery is both tiring a frustrating with tremendous sensitivity to light and sound, lack of appetite and the inability to move too much. While all of this has been normal as far as recovery - its been tiring. Under the care of family - mostly our mom and his wife Sue - we've been keeping tough and positive.

On February 21st the biopsy revealed a 4cm, stage 2 oligodendroglioma - a form of tumor that appears in the brain. On March 6th, a procedure will be done to remove as much of the tumor as possible. Following this procedure there will be chemo-radiation therapy, physical & occupational therapy, and potentially speech therapy. In addition, further CAT scans and check-ups will administer as needed.

The intent of this page will be to update you all on progress, appointments or requests we may have of all of you. For those that know Pete - you know he is tremendously active, generous, funny, and caring. This is a great venue to express your support and check-in with - with other options such as texting, calling, and of course facebook as options :)

In the "Ways to Help" menu above is a Go Fund Me to help our family with some relief with expenses. Anything at all is appreciated. Newest Update

Journal entry by sue Bieri

Radiation is behind us, other than mild headaches and fatigue Pete is continuing to gain strength. He finished his first round of oral chemo which was over 5 days. He has  a break of 23 days and repeats this until the end of December.
He does an hour nap in the afternoon as this regime is also very tiring.
He is not experiencing any nausea, and is tolerating this better than expected.
Our challenge in the next 10-14 days will be the drop in white blood cells as well as platelets. He will be at risk for bleeding and infection. He takes a low dose antibiotic  to prevent pneumonia which could be fatal per his oncologist.
We ask that no one with any infection of any kind  visit due to his risk.
We are continuing to live life, spending free time in nature up north and will be out west with our kids and grandchildren this summer. Pete is always up for a card game, a visit, and maintains a great sense of humor. Please continue praying for us during this journey. Thankyou  for the love and concern we have received through all of this❤️
