Paul’s Story

Site created on April 1, 2024

START HERE: I’ve but together a little FAQ.

What happened? Paul went to the hospital for stomach pain which ended up in removal of his gallbladder. After his gallbladder surgery he had two strokes, and subsequent brain bleed and brain swelling.

What caused the strokes? The docs aren’t sure and are still investigating.

When will Paul get out of the hospital? This will be a long journey to recovery. Best case scenario is months including lots of PT.

Have the strokes caused damage? Where the stroke was often causes right side paralysis, speech impairment and feeding issues. As of right now Paul shows movement on his left side. And for the first time on 4/2, he showed very very little movement in his right arm; a positive sign. We won’t know more until he is more alert.

Can we come visit? Paul is at Moss Rehab, 60 Township Line Road, Elkins Park PA. Room 487. He’s only allowed two visitors at a time so there may be a wait while others are visiting. His schedule is available at 6:00pm the night before. You may want to call the nurses station and see when he will have free time. Their number 215-663-6231. Visiting hours are 9am- 9pm.

Where can we send cards? You can send them to my house and I’ll be sure Paul gets them when he’s more alert. 4455 Jenny Road Doylestown PA 18902

Paul’s team has their weekly team meeting today.  Here’s the report…

OT- They are working on dressing and Paul is a hard worker and showing progress.
PT- They are working on getting from bed to a chair. He can do it but is assisted 75%. He has taken 10-20 steps on the parallel bars.  The right side is very weak and his right ankle turns in when he walks.
ST- Paul had the video test of his swallowing and he has mild to moderate weakness.  But, he’s well enough for a soft food diet.  It’s not purée, but food cut up into small pieces.  He will get 90% of his calories from food now so he is off the tube feedings.

My mom was in the room today for a speech therapy session.  Paul did well IDing an object, but struggled to describe it.  So he could name a picture of a fork but struggled to describe the fork without using the word fork.  He did well with identifying opposites.
