Paige’s Story

Site created on December 25, 2022

Paige and Mick delivered a beautiful and healthy baby girl named Parker on December 15th via c-section in Dillon with no major complications. They were home within two days after delivery to enjoy the new addition of their family. By Tuesday December 20th Paige noticed some hard spots above her incision but otherwise no signs of infection. By Thursday Paige had definite signs of infection to her incision. The incision was drained and packed and she was sent home on oral antibiotics, with a plan to return Friday morning to get the incision drained and packed again. By Friday morning the incision was by far worse and rather then drain it and pack it they were sent to the Emergency Department in Dillon. Paige was then admitted to the hospital and place on IV antibiotics. Things took a turn for the worst that evening and the infection started to spread up Paiges side toward her rib cage and down her leg almost to her knee. The IV antibiotics were not working fast enough and doctors recommended surgery to clean out and rinse the infection, though they wanted her transferred to a higher level of care for surgery. Unfortunately they were not able to get Paige out of Dillon that night due to weather. By this point Paige spiked a fever and they recommended the surgery in Dillon and she would life flight to Salt Lake to the University of Utah Hospital. After surgery Paige and Mick were able to be life flighted to Salt Lake arriving Saturday morning where she quickly underwent another surgery and was admitted to the ICU. They had to remove a significant amount of tissue from her side to get rid of the infection, and her initial incision is open and packed until they can make sure the infection has stopped spreading and inflammation subsides before closing. At this point, Paige has had three surgeries, with still more to come. Due to the significance of her wounds, Paige has been transferred from the ICU to the burn unit so that they can assist in management. The healing of her wounds will be her biggest hurdle at this point, they are projecting she will be there at least 3 weeks. She will be getting skin grafts to help things heal while there. Paige’s parents Shawn and Michele have rented a long term Airbnb for the month along with Mick. Parker is currently with Mick’s parents in Dillon but we are hoping to reunite them soon, unfortunately the burn unit has strict visitation rules so we aren’t sure what that looks like for Parker and Paige to be together yet. Paige has a long road to recovery but despite everything she has gone through, is in good spirits. We will use this page to help update friends and family with Paige’s journey. Please send your love and prayers.

Journal entry by Michele Holmes

Sooooo very happy the day we have been waiting, hoping, and praying for has arrived! Paige was discharged today and we are on our way home at last! Thank you so much for all of your amazing support and while she has a ways to go still, we are comforted knowing this is “do-able” from home. The University of Utah Hospital Burn Unit will continue to follow her care and recovery for approximately one year via virtual visits and some in-person outpatient visits.

But just look at this amazing woman walking out of the hospital on her own and even packing her own stuff (of course we tried…). We know her strength and the amazing support from Mick, Camy, Tom, family, and friends will get her through the last leg of this journey.

Please give Paige and Mick a couple of days at home with Parker to rest and get into a routine before planning to visit. Thank you ALL once again for everything!
