Journal

One year ago today, we got the news, “Ollie has Leukemia.”

I missed a call at school from the doctor. Ed texted me to call him immediately and I knew before he said a word. I cried and hugged a coworker and left immediately to get him from my Mom’s house. I spoke to a doctor at Riley from the driveway with details of what next. I wiped by eyes again and walked in and stopped Buscia from feeding him another bite of oatmeal because the doctor said no more food because he needed a spinal tap. I brought my Mom and sister-in-law into the bedroom, told them and said it was going to be ok because I knew it was. On the way to meet Ed at home I prepared myself for the road ahead though I was unsure where that road would take us. We packed our bags and headed with our sweet boy to Riley downtown.  The Riley staff was amazing then and continue to be some of the best people we have ever been blessed with to care for our sick child.

One whole year has passed filled with chemo treatments, pills and too many clinic visits to remember. One year has passed that has been filled with so much love and support for Ollie and us that my heart could explode just thinking about it. The many acts of kindness, hugs, meals from schools/family/friends/acquaintances, gifts for the boys and us, housekeeping, financial support, babysitting and care for Ollie’s brothers, visits from dear friends and the priceless gift of care from family AND the prayers. WOW. The magnitude of prayers and positive thoughts that have been sent our way is immeasurable. I have no doubt in my mind and heart that they have gotten Ollie and us to this point.

Ollie has had his good days and bad days during this year. He fights an amazing fight all usually with a smile on his face. He teaches us how to get through this with grace and remains an inspiration.

Thank you all for helping us get through this year. Thank you for being Ollie’s Entourage. Thank YOU.

His counts are great right now after he battled back from getting RSV this December. He still has two years to go with his treatments and will still have challenges along the way. However, we know he can work through it because of his spirit and the LOVE from so many.

Much love,

The Walshes
