Ollie’s Story

Site created on February 3, 2019

Hi Everyone,

Friday, February 1st, 2019 Ollie was diagnosed B-Cell A.L.L. ... a form of Leukemia. Leslie had taken him to our family pediatrician the day before because of a distended stomach, enlarged lymph nodes, and what appeared to be mild skin irritation. Unfortunately it was something much more than a cold or the flu virus and bloating. He was admitted to Riley Children's hospital the following day and has started aggressive chemotherapy to stay ahead of the challenges that come with this terrible disease. The first 30 days are some of the toughest due to the treatment protocol and the extended clinical maintenance schedule that lasts a brutal 3 years total. The schedule coupled with targeted treatments gives us a probability of success somewhere between 90-95% that the CANCER will go into full remission and stay there for the duration of his life.

Children with Down syndrome are at higher risk to develop this condition, however, perhaps ironically, the mutation they possess from Trisomy many times helps them overcome this disease more efficiently. There is not much more to say right now. We are still absorbing the initial impact (and recovering in our own right) and we have a long way to go. In the days to come we will determine the resources our family needs to fight, our new schedule and how friends and family can help us conquer this misfortune with hope and Ollie's perpetual happiness. We love him and we know you do too ... together we will win ... " It's amazing what can be accomplished if you do not care who gets the credit ... Clarence W. Jones (Missionary) ..." ... Thank you to everyone who has already gone out of there way to be there for us and offer an on-call status from the moment they found out the news ...

P.S. One final note before we get started ... Ollie's blood type is O-Positive ... please tag your support posts for our guy with the hashtag ... #opositive

Newest Update

Journal entry by Leslie Zielinski Walsh

One year ago today, we got the news, “Ollie has Leukemia.”

I missed a call at school from the doctor. Ed texted me to call him immediately and I knew before he said a word. I cried and hugged a coworker and left immediately to get him from my Mom’s house. I spoke to a doctor at Riley from the driveway with details of what next. I wiped by eyes again and walked in and stopped Buscia from feeding him another bite of oatmeal because the doctor said no more food because he needed a spinal tap. I brought my Mom and sister-in-law into the bedroom, told them and said it was going to be ok because I knew it was. On the way to meet Ed at home I prepared myself for the road ahead though I was unsure where that road would take us. We packed our bags and headed with our sweet boy to Riley downtown.  The Riley staff was amazing then and continue to be some of the best people we have ever been blessed with to care for our sick child.

One whole year has passed filled with chemo treatments, pills and too many clinic visits to remember. One year has passed that has been filled with so much love and support for Ollie and us that my heart could explode just thinking about it. The many acts of kindness, hugs, meals from schools/family/friends/acquaintances, gifts for the boys and us, housekeeping, financial support, babysitting and care for Ollie’s brothers, visits from dear friends and the priceless gift of care from family AND the prayers. WOW. The magnitude of prayers and positive thoughts that have been sent our way is immeasurable. I have no doubt in my mind and heart that they have gotten Ollie and us to this point.

Ollie has had his good days and bad days during this year. He fights an amazing fight all usually with a smile on his face. He teaches us how to get through this with grace and remains an inspiration.

Thank you all for helping us get through this year. Thank you for being Ollie’s Entourage. Thank YOU.

His counts are great right now after he battled back from getting RSV this December. He still has two years to go with his treatments and will still have challenges along the way. However, we know he can work through it because of his spirit and the LOVE from so many.

Much love,

The Walshes
