Today Penelope was extubated! They had kept her intubated a little longer than normal in hopes to give her body rest and focus more on healing. She did not enjoy that plan. Her sats were hanging in the lower end of her allowed range, and whenever she would wake up, she would start screaming, eyes full of fear, before wearing out and falling back to sleep. We developed an extubation plan and she did wonderfully! She’s back on high flow oxygen support, sats are higher, and she had no more intense screaming episodes. She finally got some good rest while napping on dad today.
She is still uncomfortable and in some pain, as expected. Otherwise, she is stable and moving forward. We are looking forward to her healing up and the cessation of her frequent retching and vomiting.
