Nancy’s Story

Site created on June 6, 2021

After nearly six months battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia,; (AML) I have decided to avail the resources of the 21st century to communicate with friends and family by way of  CaringBridge. I hope to provide frequent updates regarding Nancy’s progress on this site.
As most of you already know, Nancy is presently residing at the City of Hope in Duarte, California having recently received a bone marrow transplant. She is currently in what they call  “day +10.”Transplant day was “Day Zero”, which was October 1.
It has been a lengthy journey that included three different chemotherapy treatments at Kaiser’s Zion Hospital during April, May and June. Nancy's generally good health and great attitude convinced her medical team that she could endure the rigorous demands of transplant even though most people her age are denied treatment.
I want to thank all of you who have prayed for us and encouraged Nancy throughout this trial. Your calls, cards and words of encouragement have not fallen on deaf ears. We know that your prayers and the Holy Spirit have carried us both through dark moments. The City of Hope blood drive organized by Patt Fowler and Peggy Stoker yielded enough blood for 93 transfusions and I know of several of you who continue to donate blood at the San Diego Blood Bank in Nancy’s name using the code “nw21”.  These acts of selflessness provide witness to your generosity,  love and caring.

The bone marrow transplant treatment regimen is 100 days.  Nancy is currently on day #10. We expect that she will be hospitalized until day 25 or 30. Then she will be released, but expected to reside near the City of Hope for most of the duration as she will have routine appointments twice weekly. Typically, transplant patients experience infections or complications that require immediate hospitalization during the 100 days.   So we plan to rent a place near the hospital.

Please visit this site to get updates. I’ll try to keep you informed as Nancy continues her journey through the shadow of the Valley of Death.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Ray Wilson

Greetings:  This journal entry is my last. Actually, today marks exactly one year since Nancy was diagnosed with AML. It has been a year-long marathon of hospital stays, emergency room visits, transfusions and medical appointments in both San Diego and LA. We accumulated over 4500 highway miles in 2021 traveling to all the above.

Nancy is now permitted to attend church, go out to restaurants, work in her garden (with a few limitations), attend concerts and little league games (our grandkids’) go to movies, etc. No mosh pits, or large gatherings like Padre games or dances. We celebrated Easter with our entire family including in-laws and more….unmasked.

She continues to take a veritable rainbow of anti-viral and anti-rejection medications (about 20 pills per day) so she is not totally out of the woods. And she continues to receive what most would consider childhood vaccines like DPT, Tdap, Hepatitis A and B, polio, and more through December ‘22. But, she is full of energy, assuming most of the activities she enjoyed before she was ill.
We are both thankful for each and every day and face our future together with renewed hope. We are again planning future trips. We have, with our kids and grandkids, already rented a house on Bass Lake near Yosemite for a week in June.  Life is good.

Caringbridge has been a useful tool keeping  friends and family updated regarding Nancy’s condition. We are grateful for the media options now available to maintain contact. It truly is a brave new world.
Good Bye and God bless,
