Nancy’s Story

Welcome to Nancy’s CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

I have a Glioblastoma.

My story starts here: I had a car accident on November 30, 2022 on the way home from the grocery store. I remember hearing the cars make contact, and getting out of my car to check the damage. I took a picture of the back of the other car, got back in my car and struggled to get my pen to write my phone number on the insurance card to give it to the other driver. When I got out the car, she said she had called the police. So I got back in my car to wait. That’s the last thing I remember for over 24 hours.

A highway patrolman was first on the scene. He came to visit me after I was just discharged from the hospital. What a wonderful gesture that was; he was worried about me and shared his details of the events. He said when he arrived, I was unconscious, gurgling and slumped over the steering wheel. He opened my airway, and by then the firetruck arrived with oxygen. He was happy to see my color get pinker. The initial suspicion was that I had a stroke. But it was likely a seizure caused by the brain tumor. I was taken by ambulance to North Memorial Hospital. Shortly after arriving, I was sent for a CT scan and began seizing on the table and became cyanotic and next step plan was intubation, but thankfully that didn’t happen! I stabilized once they put me on seizure medications. I was discharged on December 2 with a follow up for an abnormal MRI.

So much has happened since then including the blessing of getting a second opinion at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, a successful tumor resection and the start of radiation and chemotherapy.

People want to know what they can do, send positive energy and prayers. Send hugs and walk by our side on this journey. I am always amazed at what a community of love and caring can overcome.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Nancy Uden

We went to Mayo Monday for pre-op testing and appointments.  Our last appointment of the day was Dr. Myer, surgeon.  The MRI showed the tumor had doubled in size since February 21!  Based on the tumor growth and location the surgeon felt the risk of surgery was too great.  Well that was another gut punch! Treatment plan changed.  Without surgery I didn’t qualify for clinical trial.  They eliminated Optune, I will get Avastin infusions every 3 weeks at Mayo and am waiting for radiation schedule. I actually had my first infusion on Monday while we were at Mayo.
