Journal entry by Jake Powers

Hi everyone,

As many of you already know, we welcomed our perfect son, Nolan Jake Powers, into the world on July 23rd at 9:08PM! He weighed in at 5 lbs 15.42 oz but it is important to note that he peed before they weighed him, so I am going with 6 lbs, and he was 19.5 in long. All of these metrics are great for his gestational age. He came out screaming with fully developed lungs and after some routine glucose monitoring for all babies born before 37 weeks he was given the all-clear to head home! We have been home since Saturday and are getting used to this party of 5. Emma and Addison have been smitten with their little brother and have wanted to hold him, feed him, burp him, and overall spend a lot of time monitoring him very closely (see pictures).

Balancing Baby and Care

Molly was induced at 36 weeks and 4 days. All along, the plan has been to strike the perfect balance between getting Molly the treatments she needs as soon as possible and bringing a healthy baby into our family. The care plan has been managed and executed step by step leading to Molly getting all the treatments that she could safely receive in pregnancy and, very importantly, a healthy baby boy. In terms of Molly’s care, she checked in with her oncologist this past Tuesday and the plan is coming together to get her started on her remaining chemo regimen sometime during the week of August 10th. It is a 12-week course and would end in early November.

In addition, tomorrow we have a telehealth consultation with MD Anderson in Houston to get a 2nd opinion as to whether or not she will need radiation, which, if needed, would occur after chemotherapy, and would push back reconstructive surgery to the fall of 2021. If it is not needed, Molly could likely get reconstructive surgery this December. Either way, the care plan is continuing along and we are now a party of 5!

Bringing a child into the world is as emotional of an experience as there is, and considering all we had to do, all we had to balance, and all the difficult decisions we had to make to get to this point, it only made it that much more emotional for us. We couldn’t be more thankful for what we have in our lives and all the support we have had from everyone along the way. Thank you all.

Every day is getting brighter,

Jake and Molly
