Mitch’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement.

Background:
Dad went on a father daughter trip to Vietnam in 2015. Dad developed blood clots in his lungs. (PSA - always get up every two hours and wear compression socks on long flights!) A few months later, those clots passed through his lungs (pulmonary embolism). He had a few before going to the hospital. One time, he was taking out the trash and had to walk back on hands and knees.

Years after those initial clots, he was diagnosed with CTEPH. This pulmonary hypertension means that the clots in his lungs cause a higher pressure for the heart to pump against. While he has a healthy heart, this prolonged pressure causes damage over time. Moreover, he was greatly limited by his oxygen requirements. We all know Dad loves all things outdoors (Skiing, mountain biking, dirt biking, kayaking).

I’m hopes to return to his favorite activities, he decided to undergo PTE surgery to go in and remove clots in his lungs. This is similar in nature to open heart surgery. While his chest was cracked, they also replaced the aorta.

This caring bridge will provide updates on his recovery.

Thank you for visiting.

Journal entry by Victoria McKinnon

Since Dad returned from the hospital late last week, his blood pressure has been a major issue. Also, his appetite did not return quickly. Against his wishes, he was force fed water and other goodies. Good news, his appetite has now resumed.

Bad news, low blood pressure issues persist. A few days ago Mom, Mindy and Tom Metcalf were helping him move around when blood pressure would drop. Last night, he passed out while sitting up. My mom lowered him down and quickly called an. Dad finally came to when the ambulance arrived. He did not enjoy the interrogation upon arrival.

Alas, they haven’t identified the cause so he will remain at the hospital until it is safe for him to come home.

Dad is doing remarkably well mentally. His positive attitude has been very inspiring.
