Newest Update

Journal entry by Elisa Powell

Greetings friends of the Rockey’s—

Our apologies for the delay in this update. It’s been nothing less than a roller coaster of doctors, questions and decisions over the past couple weeks. The lengthy stay in the hospital was a bit difficult for Miranda, her mood and even some of the progress she was making prior to being admitted. Her uti was treated, though, and through much advocation by Joel, an urology consult took place and confirmed that Miranda’s nephrostomy tubes were no longer needed! (This is nothing short of a miracle, as Joel was told just a few weeks prior that Miranda would most likely require the nephrostomy long term, and that the tubes would need to be replaced every couple months).

While in the hospital, we had hopes of Miranda being able to be transferred to an acute rehab after being discharged from the hospital. In fact, she was even accepted by a couple rehabs to attend there, with recommendations by hospital therapists. In turn, discharge was delayed a bit, hoping insurance would come through. Unfortunately, though, insurance denied the coverage to attend an acute rehab. Rather than staying in the hospital any longer with hopes of an appeal, the decision was made for Miranda to return to the sub acute care at Southpointe, with hopes of increasing some of her therapy there.  Since returning, there have been a number of hurdles, as all Miranda’s present levels needed to be reevaluated to be able to participate in some of the activities she was able to do prior to being admitted to the hospital. It looks like some of those are being resolved, though, and there is a meeting tomorrow to help line out a clear plan of care.

Overall, Miranda’s spirits seem to be rising again. She’s had opportunities to get outside (which she LOVES) and has slowly been readjusting to therapy and movement again. Miranda is so thankful for visitors, and we are grateful for all those who have committed to visiting her. If there is anyone else who would like to visit on a regular basis, please feel free to add your information to the visitor’s calendar, found here. There are a number of holes that we’d love to fill, as having people come throughout the day truly makes such a difference for Miranda, as well as provides much needed breaks for the family.

As we continue to walk this journey with Miranda, we ask for your prayers in the following areas:

  • Please pray for the meetings coming up with Southpointe and doctors. Through the past few weeks, it’s become apparent that there are a number of different doctors making changes here or there, leaving the family/caretakers confused on who determines what and which ways are the best to advocate. Please pray for clarity and communication with the family that allows for the most growth for Miranda.
  • We are in the process of looking into fundraising opportunities to help offset some of the significant costs related therapy, hospital visits and other needed steps for Miranda’s healing journey. These costs are quite steep. Please pray for those organizing the efforts, as well as needed provisions for both Miranda and the family, as they navigate this world. We will be sure to post details on how to donate, once those decisions are made. (Please note, advertisements will often pop up on this site to donate to Caring Bridge. Please be aware those donations do NOT go directly to Miranda...even when appearing on her post. Once we have the source of fundraising determined, we will post a separate link for which friends/family can donate. We do NOT currently have that information available, though.)
  • Please continue to lift up the family, as they navigate so many unknowns and more questions than answers. Please pray for respite and renewal for the family, and additional visiting support for Miranda, to help provide more needed breaks for Joel and those supporting him.
