Journal entry by Randi Janes

Last night, after an eight-month battle with brain cancer, my dad passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. While we miss him terribly, we take comfort in the fact that he is finally free from cancer. We know that he was welcomed into Heaven by his grandpa John, grandma Ruby, and many other family members who have gone before. We appreciate everyone’s prayers and well wishes during this difficult time.

I had the greatest dad in the world, and I will love him forever.

Michael Wesley Janes, beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend passed away May 12, 2021, after an eight-month battle with brain cancer. Mike was born May 17, 1959, in Seattle, Washington. His early childhood was spent in the Seattle area where he and his siblings were raised by a single mother. When Mike was in the eighth grade, his mother remarried and they moved to the Snoqualmie Valley. It is there that he met his eventual wife of forty years, Bobbi Korsmo. In 1982, Mike graduated from Central Washington University with degrees in finance and economics. He and Bobbi then moved to Nashville, Tennessee. Mike attended the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University and graduated with an MBA in finance and accounting. After graduation, Mike and Bobbi moved to Memphis, Tennessee where Mike briefly worked in investment banking. He decided that was not the career for him and he left for a marketing position at FedEx. The first ten years, he held several roles including New Products and International Marketing before being promoted to director of Service Development Marketing. Mike then became VP of e-commerce where he was instrumental in developing fedex.com. Wanting to get back to the west coast, Mike used his e-commerce experience to become the first GM of the online Apple Store. After Apple, Mike decided to take a couple of years off to do what he considered to be the best job ever: being a dad. He was able to be there more for the kids. He watched Dave play basketball on the freshman team and saw Randi in her many school plays. Mike enjoyed being the chauffeur for the kids and their friends. He developed an interest in sports photography and had many pictures published in both the Leland yearbook and the Almaden Times newspaper. Mike then joined StubHub as the CMO. When StubHub was purchased by eBay, he left to create a startup, FanSnap, an online marketplace for tickets. He joined Vacatia as the CMO, which got him interested in family travel. These past couple of years, Mike had been busy creating a startup called Family Travel 100. He had just launched the beta version when he was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme. Mike approached this new challenge the same way that he did everything: with every fiber of his being. He fought hard until the very end and he never felt sorry for himself, only worried about Bobbi and their two kids, Randi and Dave. Mike had many interests that he and Bobbi enjoyed together, especially travel, sports, concerts, and Broadway. A highlight was seeing their favorite NFL team the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, the Seahawks lost that year. Mike’s favorite MLB team, the San Francisco Giants, won three World Series. The Golden State Warriors also won three championships. Mike always held out hope that the Seattle Sonics would get a new team. He loved to take Randi to stand-up comedy shows and to see plays and musicals on Broadway. Their all-time favorite was Hamilton. Mike and Randi sang the songs word for word for many months afterward. He loved to attend concerts and sports with Dave. They especially loved attending the 2010 NCAA Championship where his favorite college team, the Duke Blue Devil’s, won the national championship. Mike is survived by his wife Bobbi, daughter Randi, son Dave, and daughter-in-law Stephanie. He is also survived by his parents, Ron and Joanne Daniels of North Bend WA, brother John Scribner of Seattle, WA, and sisters Lori Duvall of Casa Grande, AZ, Leslie Scribner of Topock, AZ and Rhonda Daniels of North Bend, WA. He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews who loved Uncle Mike dearly as well as many other extended family members.

A common theme in Mike’s life has always been one of gratitude. He believed that there was no substitution for hustle and that helping others was truly rewarding. He was always willing to lend a hand, expecting nothing in return. A few months ago, when Mike was asked how he was doing, he said “I have always lived each day like we are not promised tomorrow. I have had a very blessed life and I regret nothing.”
