Marylyn’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Most of you who are accessing this site are aware of Marylyn's story, but here's a brief recap to date:

On Monday, December 2, Marylyn had a fall from the attic ladder (we know, we know - WHY was she up there?), and landed on the concrete garage floor resulting in a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). She was taken by EMS to University Hospitals Trauma ICU where she remained until being moved to a Step-down unit on Saturday, December 7. Her initial condition seemed grim, though not atypical of TBI - high agitation and aggression, incoherence, disorientation and confusion. There was a laceration at the back of her head (which received attention), and a brain bleed that originated in the frontal lobe. Subsequent CT scans indicated a cessation of bleeding, and diffuse spread of the blood and swelling throughout the brain. The "tincture of time" is what the doctor said would be the driving piece of her healing.

Day by day, there have been baby steps forward accompanied by many frustrations and challenges. Family advocacy has been imperative. Art, Paula and Marla met with the director of Cleveland Clinic Rehabilitation Hospital yesterday, and he is beginning the paperwork to get her transferred there. Our experience at UH has been less than awesome, and we are anxious to have her moved to a facility where she will be receiving care and therapies that will move the ball forward in a more consistent manner.

I'll be posting a couple of pictures that illustrate her progress, once I figure out how to do that. Yesterday, and again this morning, she was chair dancing and shoulder-shimmying to Tom Jones' (as sung by Paula and Marla) "She's A Lady". Can't wait to have our party/leisure girl back in full swing!

Journal entry by Rosemary Masterson

Some of you who have followed Marla's Facebook posts know that Marylyn was discharged from UH on Thursday (12/12) evening. There were conflicting stories regarding the status of her insurance precertification process, and an utter breakdown in communication and care from the "caregivers" at University Hospital. So... rather than being transferred to Cleveland Clinic Rehab, she was sent home. The ensuing 48 hours required attendance every second to keep her safe through her restless agitation, unsteadiness, and pain. Though we made every effort, she ate and drank very little.

Saturday evening, Marylyn became shaky and weak, and crumpled to the floor (guided gently by Paula and Art). After a brief powwow, and the realization that things were unlikely to improve, they took her to Hillcrest/Cleveland Clinic ER. CT scans revealed 3 active bleeds in her brain, blood clots in her lungs, and A-fib (atrial fibrillation, which causes rapid ineffective heart activity). More was done for her in 4 hours at Hillcrest than we experienced in 10 days at UH. That she was discharged from UH with no follow-up tests or scans to confirm her stable condition was medically negligent and unconscionable. We couldn't be more relieved and grateful for the attention and comprehensive CARE she is receiving so far at Hillcrest. She was admitted to the ICU late last night with hourly Neuro checks, and will be further evaluated by Neurology today. They are administering steroids every 6 hours to address the swelling and pressure around her brain, and are medicating for the A-fib.

I know that Marylyn is loved by many, and all of your thoughts and prayers are received with grateful hearts. I also need to add that Paula and Marla are Marylyn's personal angel warriors. They are a force of love and devotion like I have never seen. I have no doubt that they will persevere with unrelenting spirits until their beautiful, sweet mother is back to herself again.
