In early February 2018 Mom (Mary) started experiencing shortness of breath during CrossFit workouts and wondered if it was a left-over symptom of an upper-respiratory infection she had had back in January. When she started to feel a heaviness in her chest whenever she bent over to pick something up, she thought she better get some lab work done just to be safe. Labs from her blood work came back clear, but  an x-ray of her chest showed fluid around her left lung.

On Monday, February 19th, she had a thoracentesis (outpatient procedure involving the insertion of a hollow needle in between ribs in your back and into your chest cavity) to drain off the fluid. They took out 2 liters, with more still in there (but you can only drain 2 liters at a time for safety reasons). We were hopeful that all the fluid might be from pneumonia - inconvenient, but easily treatable with rest and meds.

On Wednesday evening, February 21st, Mom and Dad came home and upstairs to my office. They sat down and said, "Well, we didn't get good news today."
Doctors had found cancer cells in the fluid they drained off. They were either ovarian, fallopian tube, or peritoneal cells.   A CT scan on Thursday afternoon confirmed a mass adjacent to her right ovary. On Friday, February 23rd, Mom was diagnosed with advanced stage Ovarian Cancer.

In the words of a good friend, "This is a path no one wants to walk - well worn as it is. Take comfort though, our Lord is no stranger to it or his people on it."

Of course we would rather not walk this path. But we don't walk it alone . We join the community of so many others who have gone before us (and who are fighting their own cancer battles now). And we look to Jesus for comfort, for hope, and for faith for the journey.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Terry Deakle

The weather has warmed, a lot, and we just enjoyed the longest day of summer. It was cold when we started this journey amidst shock, uncertainty, fear and short dreary days of winter. Mary's maiden name is Stone and it so describes how she has weathered this storm. I'm so thankful. We have been so loved and cared for it is truly humbling and and I thank all of you who have surrounded us caped with the love of He who first loved us. Mary continues to do well and todays cancer marker continues to drop, praise God! Two weeks ago dear friends invited us to use their mount cabin that overlooks the New River in Todd. It was quiet and peaceful as we drifted down the New on kayaks that afternoon. That night as darkness fell to its fullest, the meadow below, out across the river and into the woods nearby came flashes of light. Fire flies, "litnin bugs" if you're from the south, were everywhere! Blinking in the black night like hundreds of Christmas lights without synchrony. As we both enjoy nature it was calming but delightful. The next night we again saw the courting dance of the fire flies, but this time mist shrouded the meadow, river and beyond. Still we were calmed and amazed as these airborne incandescent creatures danced for us and each other. As I stood on the deck looking into the dark I thought of you all. Lights in the dark bringing us calm and joy. Created to love as our Father cares and loves us. Even in the mist the lights shine out and pierce the darkness. Thank you Lord for your model of loving and the Holy Spirit to inspire us to share it. Thank you friends for walking with us. The treatments will shorten in the next month but will continue until this time next year. We anticipate a lightening of side effects and improvement in her energy. Our love to you all, Terry
