Mark’s Story

Site created on August 5, 2020

Mark Satkiewicz passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2020 unexpectedly from a cardiac incident while on a bike ride at 51 years old.  Mark was a loving husband and father and beloved son and brother. Mark is survived by his wife Amy and daughters Olivia and Mia, all 3 the lights of his life, his father and mother Kenneth and Lenore Satkiewicz, his sister Julie Williams (Dan), nieces Mackenzie and Emmie, and his Aunt Shay.

He was born and raised in Glenview, Illinois.  He received his undergraduate degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and his graduate degree at Loyola University of Chicago. In between College and Graduate school Mark spent a few years in Sun Valley, Idaho exploring the outdoors.  After 2 years he packed up and traveled to every National Park in the West with only his tent and his dog. This time of Mark’s life defined who he became as a person and he vowed to find his way back to the mountains at some point in his life.  Mark and Amy were married in Chicago on August 29, 1998 and moved to Pittsburgh, Dallas, New Jersey and Portland while working for NIKE.   In 2006, Mark joined SmartWool as Vice President of sales in Steamboat Springs, CO.  He was promoted to president in 2009. Mark left SmartWool in 2016 to take the role as General Manager of the Americas at Toms Shoes in Los Angeles.  His family then returned to Steamboat, where he co-founded SBT GRVL.  The inaugural race was held on August 18, 2019.

Mark had a very successful career, but his true passion was for his family, friends and time spent outside on his bike.  The family will be hosting a private service and will be posting a recorded video on Friday evening August 7th.

Contributions can be made to the Mark Satkiewicz Memorial Fund which will provide gear and resources to the Steamboat Springs youth who may otherwise be unable to participate.   Link to the Mark Satkiewicz Memorial Fund  Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club (https://www.sswsc.org/support/donate-now)

Mark Satkiewicz Memorial service link

I wish we could have invited all those who loved and respected Mark to his memorial service, but it wouldn't have been responsible.  Please sit down with your family and friends and celebrate Mark's life with love and admiration.  I have attached the link to this service for anyone to view.

Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers.  I am holding our girl's close and taking it one day at a time.  Love, Amy
