Margaret’s Story

Site created on June 23, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.
Margie Crotty was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, an aggressive and fast growing cancer of the brain, on May 5, 2020.  The awesome medical team at UCSF and Mom (as we'll call 'Margie' from now on) decided that it was best to not seek treatment. She opted to stay home, be with loved ones, and joyfully and courageously move towards eternal life.  So what does this mean? The medial team said she would be with us somewhere in the zone of 3 months, maybe more, maybe less. We just appreciate the time we have and are loving every minute of her smile, humor, great attitude, one liners, and wisdom.

She sleeps much of the day; she is awake about 6 hours a day, and spends most of that praying, laughing, bonding with children and grandchildren, offering insight and grace through her sparkling eyes, smile and hand holding.

Molly, Brigid, and myself (3 of her 4 daughters) are caring for her; Brigid carries the blessed bulk of this as she lives with mom.  Megan and Fr. Chris are with us in spirit and prayer, but just a bit farther away.  You can tell when she's on the phone with one of them by her smile from ear to ear.

Please feel free to call us for updates. My mom's phone number and the home phone number are not the best options.  If you plan on visiting, please call first. She can only handle one 'exciting' thing a day and some days, not even that. As some of you may know from your visits already, her words are scrambled and don't make too much sense and she has a hard time tracking conversations.  One of us will always be with her and can help decipher for you.

Please keep us in your prayers, that is the greatest gift. Pray for peace, healing, unity, courage, joy. I guess just that all the gifts of the Holy Spirit are with all of us all the time. Not too big of an ask, right?

love and blessings,

Journal entry by Rebecca Feeney

Hello dear friends and family,

In the few days since I've posted, Mom's changed quite a bit. She still has her winks, and squeezes your hand with love and connection, but she speaks less, makes less sense when she does, and spends most her time sleeping. She is on a variety of meds, to help with pain, sleeping, anxiety and swelling. She loves a nice, lovely looking tray with something to eat, sips her water, and yesterday was overjoyed with a hot cup of tea in the morning (I've not seen that in a long time!)

Molly is still here from Houston; our dear friend Lili took Molly's children to her farm in Oregon. A wise choice as Mom's care is getting more intense, the nights and days are blending together. Similar to how it was when we were raising babies.

It is an honor to be with my sisters, side by side. We cry, talk, sit with mom, comb her hair, paint her nails, help her bathroom, tuck her in, bring a tray, pray the Psalms, sing a few Irish songs, repeat.

We are so blessed with Hospice, our nurses and team are wonderful. They care, and they have really fallen in love with Mom. I am sure that doesn't surprise you.

Thank you for you love, support, meals, and prayer. They are life-giving.

In going through thousands of photos to distribute to loved ones, I found this one of my mom and dad gazing at their oldest son Matthew. What a reunion that will be.
