One year ago today we got the phone call we had all been praying for, they had a donor for Lukas. Tomorrow marks Lukas’ one year anniversary.
I’m not sure Lukas would say the last year has been easy - but anyone that’s seen him lately is amazed. He has energy like he’s never had, he has an appetite like a 16 year old and we hope he is soon able to move onto the next stage of adulting. He has plans to go back to school but hasn’t gotten the “all clear” from his physicians. He has recently started working at the restaurant in town and has really enjoyed a new challenge and getting back into public life.
We remain humbled by all the friends, families and neighbors that stood beside us during Lukas’ recovery. One of my favorite moments was when someone said, “Lukas, we’re all praying for you.” Lukas responded with a big smile and said “I know.” Because we did, we knew we had a whole army behind him. We are thankful for our medical team and the technology that makes transplant a possibility. We remain in awe that Lukas has the personality he has - to withstand the pokes and prodding, the dialysis and the surgeries… he probably spent more time comforting me that I did him!
April is National Transplant month, rather timely. Please consider checking the box on your licence. Seventeen people die daily waiting for a transplant. Lukas’ donor was only 19, we will forever be indebted to her family. We humbly remember the family that today has lived for one year without their daughter.
I wanted to do something special tomorrow, but Lukas wants to work - so I guess we will celebrate that he is able to work, he is able to do “normal.”
Here’s the normal! 🥂 🤘
