Journal entry by Dawn Falk

6 months!  Lukas had surgery April 27th and  after a few complications - he is thriving.  He’s gained about 25 pounds, he’s cut his hair and is looking forward to his future.  He still has labs every two weeks and monthly appointments but he hasn’t had dialysis since the week after surgery, he can pretty much eat what he wants and takes about 1/2 as many pills  as he was taking.  He’s not cleared to go to school yet, but he’s making plans.  Is life perfect? Nope.  He’ll always have meds and appointment and have to drink 3 liters a day.  But life is good.  He looks good, feels good.  Has an appetite and energy that he hasn’t really ever had.  It’s the little things - like being able to finish watching a movie with us because he doesn’t have to “hook up” to get 9 hours of dialysis in before he wakes up.  But also the big things - like making plans to go back to school and get back to his life.

We remain humbled by the support he’s had.  Thank you.  When it comes down to it. - friends, family and community.  That’s all that matters.

It’s hard not to forget that he has a future because of the gift he received from a stranger; that lives only through her donations.  I know that while I get to celebrate 6 months there is another mom that is mourning 6 months.

Celebrate the little things, keep loved ones close and don’t take tomorrow for granted. 🤘
