CHEMOTHERAPY UPDATE!!

Lonny is in the process of wrapping up his FIRST chemo treatment. He is doing SO well and in high spirits.

Some highlights:

  • Lonny will have chemo every three weeks until August/September
  • The rest of his treatments will be in outpatient 
  • So far side effects have been manageable and they expect they will continue to be
  • He will be leaving the hospital tonight!

The rest of this update will include all information necessary for anyone caring for him over the next few weeks:

  • Medications/Monitoring:
    • Morning:
      • Omeprazole (first thing upon waking, take indefinitely) 
      • Prednisone (with food through Tuesday) 
    • Evening:
      • Shot
        • Start Saturday night at 9pm
        • Continue nightly for full 5 night supply
        • KEEP IT IN THE FRIDGE
        • Leave it out 30 minutes before you take the shot so it isn't so cold
      • Claritin for bone pain (but he can take this anytime during the day, this is just a possibility)
    • Throughout the day
      • Salt/baking soda mouth wash (4-5x EACH day)
        • If sores show up, contact doctor for prescription
      • Zafron at the FIRST sign of nausea - do NOT wait on this!
      • Miralax for any constipation
      • Monitor temperature 
        • Contact a doctor for ANYTHING above 100.4
      • Monitor numbness in fingers and toes 
        • Contact a doctor with any issues

 

  • Precautions:
    • Safety:
      • EVERYONE needs to wear an N-95 mask around Lonny unless he is in his room alone
      • ANYONE entering his room MUST wear a mask
      • AVOID children
      • AVOID sunlight (he must cover himself fully when outside)
      • AVOID knives, razors, anything sharp
      • He needs to stay active, but he shouldn't push himself too hard
    • Diet:
      • AVOID raw foods, leftovers, ANYTHING left out of the fridge, anything uncooked
      • AVOID ALL supplements, natural herbs, including vitamin C
      • LOTS OF WATER!!!

 

  • Daily Essentials for ENTIRE chemo treatment:
    • Mouth rinse (4-5 times daily)
    • Monitor temperaure 
    • Monitor nausea and take medication at first sign of any nausea
    • STAY HYDRATED
    • STAY ACTIVE
    • Wear a mask around ANYONE
    • Stay away from kids and ANYONE who is frequently seeing people
    • When in doubt, REACH OUT
