Journal

I am about 12 days post-op and my healing and recovery are coming along very well! I have been learning the discipline of resting and it has been not only good for the body but also for the soul. Our family has been truly blessed by the daily meals as well as help with transportation. That is all winding down later this week and in good time. Although I won’t be moving at lightning speed anytime soon, I’m adding back in basic daily tasks.

My pathology from the reconstruction surgery came back showing no cancer. This confirms our prayers were answered; the cancer had all been removed during the first lumpectomy. At this time I am still waiting to hear from the radiation doctor on my DCISionRT (the risk-benefit assessment regarding radiation). However my breast surgeon said today that regardless of the numbers the assessment renders, she said it will be recommended I have radiation. My younger age is actually a big reason for that. In addition, if DCIS returns, it’s likely to be invasive. The purpose for Radiation Therapy as well as Hormone Therapy is of course to lessen the chances of return. Although pathology did not detect cancer, it is impossible to guarantee every cancer cell was removed during surgery.

I also spent some time this past week gaining clarity about my genetics testing. Although I am considered negative for all of the mutations associated with breast cancer, the one variant detected is ‘inconclusive’. With further studies and advances in science, I could get a call tomorrow or ten years from now changing the variant to a mutation. On the other hand, it may never show as a mutation. There were some other pieces of information I learned about that particular gene that were also super helpful.

I am at a place of peace. The Lord has been gracious to satisfy questions and concerns I have had throughout the process. The biggest unknown for all of us is always the future. But the Lord is in the future and there is no need to fear.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5)

“For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
