Lisa’s Story

Site created on January 23, 2021

We are incredibly blessed to have a large community of family and friends supporting Lisa, and our family, as we embark on this difficult journey. We have started this Caring Bridge page to help keep everyone updated in one place. We plan to post minimally on social platforms and ask that you please follow the journal section of this page for updates. Thank you in advance for all of your love, support and encouragement.
- Jeff, Lisa & Ben

Around her birthday in October, Lisa started experiencing some symptoms of acid reflux, feeling of food stuck in her throat and feeling full after small meal portions. As this continued to persist, Lisa went in for a few tests which were suggesting that she may have an ulcer. Our world was changed on December 31, 2020 when Lisa went for an upper endoscopy. The results told us that there was indeed an ulcer, that she had become anemic, and most shockingly that there were two tumors in her stomach. We spent the holiday weekend processing all of this and anxiously awaiting the results of the biopsy. The following Monday, we got the call that nobody wants to hear: that the tumors were cancerous. We spent the next few days processing all of this, setting up more tests and appointments, and setting up plans to help care for Ben. Each appointment has helped bring together another piece of the puzzle in understanding the severity and also creating her treatment plan. So far, we've been very impressed with the care team at Froedert and we trust that she is in the best of care as she begins treatment fighting Stage IV stomach cancer.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Jeff Bartoszewicz

Three years. I cannot believe it's been three years since Lisa's diagnosis. When we first found out Lisa had stage IV stomach cancer three years ago, we wouldn't have expected her to be doing this well today.

We are extremely grateful for Lisa's care team. They have been compassionate and forward thinking through this journey so far. They have given us more time together as a family and that's something I will always be thankful for.

2023 was arguably the busiest, most active year of our lives... if you know us, that's saying something! We've been doing our best to live life to the fullest. We traveled to DC, Hawaii, and took family trips to Tennessee and Disney. To think, 3 years ago, Lisa was upset she'd never get the opportunity to take Ben to Betty Brinn Children's Museum... look at us now!

Lisa's last scan after Thanksgiving was stable (which we will take!) Since that time, Lisa has been able to stay off of treatment and has been feeling relatively well. There are still days she doesn't feel right, eats too fast or too much, but she has learned to listen to her body in the past few years about living without a stomach. With those recent scan results, she's able to continue taking a break from treatment until her next scan in late February.

Happy cancerversary, Lisa! Here's to another year closer to moving the 5-year survival rate in the right direction.
