Lily’s Story

Site created on December 31, 2023

At our routine 20 week ultrasound, they found something concerning with Lily’s heart. After many doctors visits she was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome. This is a significant Congenital Heart Defect in which the right side of her heart is severely underdeveloped. This rare defect will result in 3 open heart surgeries over her first 2-3 years. The first taking place in her first week of life and the second about 3 to 6 months later. She will most likely remain in the hospital between those first two surgeries as it is the riskiest time for these babies. She will undergo a lifetime of medical challenges, but the doctors are hopeful that after the third surgery, she will be able to live a (mostly) normal life.

Because of her many needs, we will deliver in Pittsburgh where she will soon after be admitted to the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. This hospital specializes in Pediatric Cardiology and we are so thankful for all that they will do for our heart warrior.

We are asking for prayers for our little girl and the rest of our family as we make this big transition. Our doctors recommend that we move out to Pittsburgh in early January, ahead of time in case the baby comes early. We are heading out January 1st and will rent a place to stay for the first two weeks before she is born and then move into the Ronald McDonald House for the rest of our stay in Pittsburgh. Mariah's induction date is scheduled for January 11th.

We are thankful for our community who has already surrounded us with so much love and support. We know there will be many challenges ahead, but we know that God will provide and show his love and mercy through it all.

Journal entry by Mariah Kime

Lily pretty much slept all day yesterday and last night which we were thrilled about. She hadn’t been able to rest comfortably like that previously.

This morning around 2am they turned off her morphine drip and everything went downhill from there. Starting at 4am, any time Lily was awake she was crying out in pain. They tried so many things and grew concerned that it might be another issue with her heart. Each time she cried her stats would majorly dip. We were on edge, afraid that we would fall into the same pattern as her first surgery.

They got an echo and praise God it looked good! So that began the journey of trying to get Lily comfortable today.

They decided the problem was a three headed monster. Severe headaches, constipation, and withdrawal symptoms.

Finally at 6:00pm, they got her pain managed and her withdrawal symptoms under control. We even got some smiles.
We are praying so hard that progress can continue to be made and Lily will remain comfortable moving forward. We are also praying that we can start making progress with feeds, weans of oxygen and meds, and getting her chest tubes out so we can head out of the ICU.
Thankful for you all and still praising the Lord for his loving hand on Lily’s life.
