Lexi’s Story

Site created on December 14, 2020

Hello Everyone, Quick FYI:  Please if you want to donate to Lexi, DO NOT CLICK TRIBUTE this goes to keeping the caringbridge site going (all donations to them are also greatly appreciated as it helps keep Lexis page going) Instead there is a GoFundMe Page set up for Lexi, find the "Ways to Help" and click there. Sorry for the confusion to who has already donated there. As some of you may or may not know Lexi, daughter of Kyle and Cassie Hanson, had been having issues with stomach pains since the beginning of summer 2020. She had been in multiple times never to really find anything out other then the doctor thinking she had a dairy allergy. So she went ahead and cut out all dairy but still proceeded to have stomach pains. They brought her in again where they then decided to send her in for and Endoscopy where everything turned out good! December 1st they did an Ultrasound to check for possible Gallbladder issues. The Ultrasound Tech noticed something rather concerning and asked Cassie to be in contact with the ordering doctor ASAP and he added another scan at that time. They got in contact with her doctor the next day after he had a chance to read her ultrasound results. He ordered a CT scan to be done ASAP which was done on December 4th to confirm and try to get more detail into what the Ultrasound was showing. The family was then informed that Lexi has a tumor in her abdomen that measured 10.9 X 10.6 X 10.5 cm (grapefruit size). From there, they were set up with an appointment the very next day December 5th, at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis with an Oncologist for them to discuss what needs to happen next. She had a PET scan on Dec. 11th where they confirmed that it was cancerous but unsure of anymore details and scheduled for surgery. December 14th, Lexi was scheduled to have the tumor removed and anything else Cancerous. Unfortunately, when they arrived to Children's Hospital, they referred to the tumor as very angry. If they were to remove the tumor at that time, they more then likely would of had to remove her ovaries and uterus. So instead of doing so, they placed a Port in to be able to start Chemo when ready and to have one less surgery and did some laproscopic scopes. 2 surgeons and the Oncologist was called in during this time. They took a sample of the the 2 liters of fluid that they removed and 2 of the implants to send for results in hopes to find out what kind of cancer it may be. They then can determine the next best route without having to remove either of her reproductive organs as of now. The tumor has grown since last week according to the Surgeon and Oncologist. Possibilities at this point are Germ Cell Tumor or a rare case of Ovarian Cancer in a teen.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Cassie Hanson

Hi All,

It's been awhile but we wanted to have actual news to update you all with.
First of all, Lexi is doing well!!! She has had/having some bumps in the road BUT we have or are currently working through them with Children's Hospital and Mayo Clinic. Some new appointments and scans have come up because of these.

She is keeping active and has been asked to start Rehab PT to help with healing and building muscle back. Lexi and her friend Kennedee are both unable to participate in Softball this year so together, they are cheering from the side lines!!! During her healing process and online schooling...she pushed herself even in a different way and recieved her Permit 🤪!!
Lexi is anemic again (unsure of why at the moment) and is back to taking something to help. She ended up with an infection back in February but was treated with antibiotics and has been good ever since.

The BIG news....at her 3 month appointment at Children's yesterday, Lexis CA-125 levels are officially down to a 16!!!! This is good news compared to her first few CA-125 checks!! We will not know any other details until we meet with her Gynecologist Oncologist at her 6 month appointments in July at Mayo but felt this is some GREAT news to be able to share! Lexi amazes us EVERYDAY with her strength.

Words cannot express how grateful and blessed we are to have family, friends, our community and many people we have never even met for all of the prayers, love and support.  We Thank You!
