Laura’s Story

Site created on July 6, 2010

After a couple of weeks of nagging, but very bearable, rib pain I decided to see the doctor. He did not think it was broken but ordered and x-ray and saw a fracture, but not an injury fracture. A CT Scan showed a large mass on my left chest which indicated lung cancer or other cancers such as multiple myeloma. After seeing a surgeon to remove the mass (and an initially encouraging report from her) proteins showed up in my blood. Subsequent blood and urine tests were done and they indicated Multiple Myeloma (MM) The hematologist I then saw did an x-ray series, PET scan and breathing tests. The breathing tests went well but the PET scan showed some additional active cancer cells in other areas. Unfortunately the bone marrow biopsy done last week was negative. That is usually a conclusive test for MM. Yesterday (7/15) I had a biopsy of the actual chest mass. This was a little more invasive but not bad. Turns out I actually know the chief of hematology and oncology as his children attended our Center for some time. My Dr. off for 2 weeks and he has stepped in the move tests along and he will meet with me Tuesday morning. Hopefully for some answers. I guess at this point I hope it is MM as even though that is not curable it is treatable and many patients live for several years, even decades. My otherwise excellent health should hopefully be a plus! As you can imagine the not knowing and the waiting are torturous but my family, keeping busy and my new anxiety drugs are helping! Your thoughts, prayers and reaching out with love have given more comfort than you can ever know. Please just keep it light as remarks about "devastation, crying, heartbreak" sound kind of scary! I love everyone who cares enough to even check here. Laura

Newest Update

Journal entry by Laura Bates

Well a lot has happened since last we "talked"! The day after my last post I was admitted to Highland Hospital. Turns out I had bacterial pneumonia. That led to a 3 night stay  as we waited for test results to determine the best antibiotic for my strain of the illness.

Christmas was lovely. Alison and Jeff  hosted and as difficult as it was for me to give it up it was the right decision. They were gracious hosts and we all brought things to contribute However, I was still coughing!

When I went for my injection 1/3. I was feeling a little poorly but was in denial, as I did not want to miss a treatment. I tried to put on a "healthy face" but when I had to admit I thought I was going to be sick to my stomach. Dr. Passero said we had to skip my treatment. I asked him if he was concerned about skipping and he said not at all, he would be more concerned with giving me the treatment when I was not feeling well. They tested me for RSV, Covid and Flu and called me an hour or so later to say I tested positive for flu. I have never had the flu my whole life! I really did not feel that bad (maybe because I had the flu shot?) but I started Tamiflu and quickly felt better. I had my next treatment per schedule on 1/17.  My cough, evidently my BFF, still was here keeping me company.

We headed to Florida 1/18. I appreciated taking 2 nights on the road, especially since my sciatica (now on the right side) was pretty bad.

I had my first visit and treatment at Moffitt on 1/30. That went well. My NP feels my pain probably is nerve pain (sciatica) based on her exam but set up an MRI for my next visit to see if anyting else is going on.  In the meantime I am having accupuncture, and using heat and ice and rest. I am also following the advice of my NP and accupuncture doc and cooling it on any exercise (although they said I can do the pool). Hopefully, I will feel better by my next visit and we can cancel the MRI. They SO nice at Moffitt.  So are their new heated, vibrating recliners in the  treatment center!

We have had great weather since we arrived. Cool, but very sunny, with a couple of 80 degree days sneaking in. No rain so far, but it looks like tomorrow will give us a good soaking. Which we need. And guess what? For the first time since about May my cough is just about gone!

Take care. I always appreciate your kind thoughts and prayers.
Hugs
